This is the deck that I played to end our campaign. It took us a number of tries to achieve victory, but it was a lot of fun to play and hopefully will give others ideas when they face this quest. We had killed the Wraiths on Wings and had 8 turns to finish the quest to destroy the Ring!

Boons

Boromir had Valiant Warrior and Intimidation attached. Erestor had Esquire of Gondor attached.

Deck Design

This deck was designed to address the particular conditions of this quest.

  • All decks need to get high using few characters.
  • All decks need to have few or no allies.

To approach this quest, I decided to build a deck that aims to get as much on Boromir to take advantage of his readying, which even post-errata proved essential. Denethor provided resource generation, and Erestor provided card draw. I included cards like Visionary Leadership, Song of Hope, Strider, and Dúnedain Quest to boost Boromir's as much as possible. The partner deck also ran Fellowship of the Ring, boosting every hero's .

To make use of cards like Visionary Leadership and Song of Hope, Boromir needed as many resources as possible. Denethor provided the necessary access to the resource generation in (Steward of Gondor, Gaining Strength, Wealth of Gondor, and Legacy of Númenor) and could contribute his resource to Boromir if necessary. Erestor helped draw the cards to generate the resources necessary to support the combo.

With his innate readying ability, Boromir can quest and commit to Fortitude Tests. By Turn 1, Boromir could quest for reasonable 3-5 with some combination of Song of Hope, Visionary Leadership, Dúnedain Quest, or Strider. If the partner deck has Fellowship of the Ring in play, he may even be able to quest for 6 . With the full kit, Boromir could quest for 8 , if there are enough resources for Song of Hope and Visionary Leadership. With Celebrían's Stone from the partner deck, he even quested for 10 one turn. If Visionary Leadership and Fellowship of the Ring are in play and Boromir quests, Erestor can also commit a very respectable 5 .

This deck also provides the essential combat power necessary to survive the walk to Mount Doom. Some defense was key for this victory. Denethor gets Gondorian Shield and Armored Destrier. Erestor gets Rivendell Blade to provide a little more hitting power. Boromir can kill the smaller enemies on his own and make good progress on larger enemies with judicious use of Gondorian Fire. The Wizards's Voice can help stem the tide and gives you the chance to plan take a few enemies out of the staging area when it comes up. The second copy of Gondorian Shield can go on Boromir.

The rest of the cards in this deck support the partner deck. Fast Hitch goes on Sam Gamgee or Frodo Baggins as do Friend of Friends. Heed the Dream helps fetch whichever cards are necessary at the moment.

The ideal set up is for you to have Strider and another card that generates , such as Visionary Leadership on Boromir along with resource generation. You also want to have Fast Hitch or Friend of Friends for the hobbits. Gondorian Shield is also a good draw.

Once you have this, quest with Boromir and Erestor leaving Denethor home to defend. We tried to finish Stage 1 in Turn 1, Stage 2 in Turn 2, Stage 3 in Turn 4, and the final stage in Turn 5.

Opening Hand

I looked for Strider, Song of Hope, and resource generating cards. Visionary Leadership also proved invaluable since it provided a 3 boost to the heroes.

Final Thoughts

I quite enjoyed this deck. Getting Boromir to such high was fun, and the narrative twist of Boromir walking into Mordor to help Frodo was icing on the cake.

I do think the deck could be stronger with some tweaks. Dúnedain Quest rarely hit the table. I always had something else better to play. Rohan Warhorse may be a useful card for Boromir. This deck is weak to the Heavy and Tired Treachery but we managed to avoid it for the most part. The Wizards's Voice provided surprisingly helpful because it gave us one-turn of no defending. In such a tight quest, that one turn can be all you need to walk into Mordor.

Partner Deck

The partner for this deck was Navarrenightblade's Quest with the Best, Don't Die Like the Rest.
