Devaresh 2024

Few now remember them,' Tom murmured, 'yet still some go wandering, sons of forgotten kings walking in the loneliness, guarding from evil things folk that are heedless.' – Fog on the Barrow-downs

This is my more recent take on the Dúnedain archetype with a mostly thematic deck. I liked the concept of recurring Reinforcements and Sneak Attack to be able to continually pull enemies and help others across the board to represent the Dúnedain showing up unexpectedly to protect those in need.

I included Faramir because 1) he is my favorite character, and 2) he slots in incredible well when I can engage and trigger his effect potentially multiple phases a turn.

The deck is low on willpower but can function solo against many quests. It excels at helping control the board state and managing enemies. It is best as a multiplayer deck paired with another deck with healing and stronger willpower.

How does it play?

In your opening hand you’ll want to see either Reinforcements or Sneak Attack and some allies to make use of it. If you have A Very Good Tale in hand you’ll have several ways to trigger it putting allies into play using allies already in play or one of the events I just mentioned, or Ranger of Cardolan.

Amarthiúl will be your strongest defender and you’ll want to load him up with Armored Destrier and Dúnedain Warning.

Gandalf is there to come in and out of play and provide threat reduction, card draw, or extra damage as needed.

Generally you’ll want to hold 3 weaker enemies and work to take out any additional enemies as they come out. The deck can handle more enemies then that as needed, especially if others are handling the questing.

Also don’t forget Reinforcements is incredibly flexible in multiplayer to allow others to get key allies out for a turn as well!

Lastly I’ll mention you can include Aragorn and Sword that was Broken if you want to put up more numbers in willpower. I excluded them with the intention of using this deck in saga quests.

Summary

This is a fun and different take for me on the Dunedain archetype that embraces a more fluid board state in favor of continual engagement options to get the most out of Faramir’s ability.

It’s not a power deck by any stretch but I have greatly enjoyed the hit and run feel to the tactics of the deck and it feels very thematic for the Rangers of the north.

Give it a try and I hope you enjoy it!
