SPEAR SHALL BE SHAKEN, SHIELD BE SPLINTERED!

"Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red-day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!"

--Théoden at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, LotR III p.137

DECK OVERVIEW

This is a mono-Tactics deck based on the theme of the Rohirrim coming to the aid of Gondor during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. It is designed to be played with the companion mono-Leadership & mono-Spirit decks--"Ride Now, Ride Now!" & "Arise, Riders of Théoden!"--in my "Ride to Gondor!" Fellowship. Note that hero stats referenced in the descriptions of all three decks reflect the bonuses provided by Elfhelm, as 8 of the 9 heroes have a Mount attachment.

The focus of this deck within the Fellowship is typical for the martial Tactics sphere: engagement control, defense, and attack. The heroes & allies are most adept at combat and are charged exclusively with defending against and attacking enemies across the board.

HEROES & ATTACHMENTS

Beregond is fully-armed with a Raven-winged Helm, Gondorian Shield & Spear of the Citadel; all of which he can attach at 0-cost. He is charged with defense of the walls and can defend at 6 , ready with Behind Strong Walls, and defend against a second attack at 7 . And as a sentinel, he can defend against attacks across the board. The Day's Rising, from "Ride Now, Ride Now!", lets him gain a resource after defending.

Éomer leads the attack mounted on Firefoot and wielding a Spear of the Mark. He can attack alone at 7-8 with excess damage spilling over onto another enemy, then draw 3 cards with Foe-hammer. He is also a good candidate for Unexpected Courage from "Arise, Riders of Théoden!"

Háma rides a Rohan Warhorse into battle hefting a Spear of the Mark and can attack twice at 5-6 , recycling a key event each time he attacks.

Note that several attachments are meant to be attached to heroes in other decks. One Spear of the Mark goes on Elfhelm in "Ride Now, Ride Now!", and Golden Shield goes on Théoden and Horn of Gondor on Caldara in "Arise, Riders of Théoden!". I would have preferred to attach the Horn to Beregond, but he already has two restricted attachments.

ALLIES & EVENTS

Except for Gandalf, all of the allies in the deck have either the Gondor or Rohan trait in order to benefit from universal effects in the other decks, like Mutual Accord, For Gondor!, Éomund, Visionary Leadership & Astonishing Speed, as well as Forth Eorlingas! from this deck.

A third of the allies are sentinels who can defend against enemies engaged with other players. Quick Strike & Tireless Hunters let you attack or engage enemies engaged with other players before they have a chance to attack, and Knight of Minas Tirith & Forth Eorlingas! enable preemptive attacks against the staging area. When needed, Honour Guard can cancel damage against any character. Delay the Enemy lets each player discard an enemy engaged with him, while Feint can protect a player for a turn from an enemy engaged with him.
