DazeMan 710

This deck has become one that I have decided to use going forward in order to introduce new players into the game. It offers the ability for someone even vaguely familiar with The Lord of the Rings to use characters whom they know, and have a straight forward, easy-to-play, decently powerful deck. I decided to go with Aragorn over some of his other incarnations, in order for a new player to use a straight forward duel sphere deck. The weakness of the deck is its high starting threat, but I did not find too many issues with it.

Celebrían's Stone is a good card to look for in the starting hand as well as Steward of Gondor, so that Aragorn can have the ability to pay for pretty much everything in the deck. The mechanics of the deck are not complicated, but a new player should be pointed to the combinations of Sneak Attack and Gandalf, We Are Not Idle exhausts Gimli for a reource and a card but Greenwood Archer can ready him if both cards are in hand, and how Elven-light is the most efficient fueling system for Legolas's ability. All of the characters are noble, so Envoy of Pelargir essentially becomes a 1 cost ally. The attachments have obvious placements, the allies boost the questing and the heroes quest and fight per their action advantage abilities.

I remember what a nightmare it was to try to learn how to win this game back in the core set only days. If you are trying to get into the game or know someone who is, I recommend giving this deck a try. It is fun, efficient and, most importantly, it has done a good job of winning so far.

Strategy Tips:

Attachments

Aragorn's Attachments: Celebrían's Stone, Steward of Gondor, Sword that was Broken

Gimli's Attachments: Dwarven Shield and King Under the Mountain

Legolas's Attachments: Mirkwood Long-knife

-Try to use Galadriel to fetch Sword that was Broken instead of paying 3 resources from your hand.

-Boots from Erebor and Dúnedain Remedy are in the sideboard if Gimli is dying too easily.

-We Are Not Idle is ideal if you have a Greenwood Archer in hand, in order to pop Gimli back up.

I realize this is a very old deck at this point and don't expect a reply, but it's perfect for our uses and I thought I'd ask a couple of questions:

I'm a fairly new player here. My wife and I are starting a two-player run through the LotR Saga boxes and we are planning using this deck along with: ringsdb.com

I loved Unexpected Courage from the Core, I assume there is one, but what is the reason not to use it in this deck? The card seems simple and powerful, and with Celebrian's Stone on Aragorn you'd have two heroes that could pay for it.

Additionally the Hobbit deck linked above uses one copy of Faramir and two copies of Halbarad. Would you suggest us substituting something for them in this deck to prevent duplicates, or is that not important?

Hey @GLRob, thanks for the question. It has been quite some time since I have used this deck or even played LotR LCG, but thanks to email notifications, I can give you my best reply. I believe I did not include Unexpected Courage because the deck didn't really need it. Because the abilities on the heroes give them built in action advantage UC seemed like a bit of overkill. At the time, I was also trying to experiment with decks that did not use Unexpected Courage.

With that said, it is undoubtedly a powerful card and could slot well in this deck. And since you are partnering up with a hobbit deck, you can always give a UC to one of the heroes from the other deck that do not have built in action advantage. Since the other deck uses Halbarad and Faramir, you could just take those guys out and slot Unexpected Courage in their place.

Looking at the other decklist, it looks like you could really take advantage of Gimli's sentinel ability and Legolas's ranged, while allowing the hobbits to engage enemies to take advantage of Sam Gamgee's ability. I would also highly suggest throwing Rosie Cotton in the other deck to make it extra powerful.

Hopefully this is helpful and that you and your wife enjoy the campaign :) It truly is an epic experience!

Thank you for the detailed (and quick) response! We'll try those changes out.
