"Speak, or I will put a dint in your hat that even a wizard will find hard to deal with!"

-Gimli, Lockbearer

The idea here is an old one: Get two Citadel Plates on Gimli as fast as possible. The combo has been around since the core set and has helped many-a-player smash boss face. My aim with the deck was to accelerate this tried & true formula using some new tricks from The Wilds of Rhovanion.

The new important cards are Bartering and Long Lake Trader. Each of them allow you to exploit Beregond's discount to benefit Gimli. Bartering can be used to play Citadel Plate on the opening turn, letting Gimli easily take an undefended attack if needed. Once Long Lake Trader is online you can scoot plates over from Beregond to Gimli at will.

Side note - Long Lake Trader can also save heroes that receive nasty shadow effects - just move some HP to the defending hero.

Ent Draught, Vigilant Guard, and a singleton Boots from Erebor round out the HP buffs. Vigilant Guard is especially synergistic in this deck since it allows you to load damage onto Gimli at-will utilizing Treebeard's ability. There will be times when you need a few more points on Gimli to have 'excactcies'. In those instances, Treebeard has the situation under control.

Side note- if you use Vigilant Guard's ability Treebeard will not receive the wp/atk bonus, as taking damage is a cost that must be paid in order for Treebeard to receive the benefit.

One more throwback combo makes an appearance with Gondorian Spearman and Spear of the Citadel. Long Lake Trader is clutch once again, allowing you to play the Spear on Spearman for 'free' via Beregond.

Grappling Hook is here if the team ever needs to YOLO quest.

Opening Hand

The best card to find right off the bat is our main ingredient: Citadel Plate. Gondorian Shield, Master of the Forge, or Ent Draught are also good cards for the starting six.

Weaknesses

This deck does not really quest much. Its aim is definitely to defend big enemies and attack them back. Treebeard can contribute once healing comes online, but that definitely takes some time.

Possible Changes

While Lore is necessary, Treebeard certainly is not. He shores up the early game and provides access to Ent Draught. If this deck is paired with an Ent deck, Treebeard could probably be dropped in favor of Elrond for willpower and defense or Bifur if the accompanying deck can handle questing on its own.

I want to find a replacement for Envoy of Pelargir, but her stat line is pretty decent when you consider her net cost of 1.

"Here's your letter..." -PeaceAndThought

Solo vs. Multiplayer

This deck just doesn't have the questing power needed to handle locations easily. It's also been noted that this deck really likes having an Elrond around. Gimli really just aims to smash bosses while the partner deck handles more of the questing.

Thank you for taking the time to look over the list. Any ideas or friendly criticisms are welcomed and would be most appreciated.

This is a very cool application of Long Lake Trader. Also the deck name is fantastic! Have you considered making a deck pair that can take additional advantage of Trader synergies?

@pokie- That's an interesting question. The primary strength of the deck is abusing Beregond's discount for armor and weapons.

Armor - Check! :)

Weapons - Unfortunately, most weapons contain restrictions that prevent them from synergizing with Beregond. This makes it tough to stretch his resource advantage to fuel another deck's offense. :(

As far as other items, I'd debated playing a single A Burning Brand so Treebeard could go on defensive duty. The slot was dropped since Gimli and Beregond already have defending covered. A Burning Brand is the highest impact item I can think of to trade to another character, though.

There is always Dale, with its item-loving allies. I believe the Dale decks have already figured out the correct balance between items and allies, but it couldn't hurt to shore up their inventory. A paired deck might also play some of the allies but not necessarily be a dedicated Dale deck. Having access to Hauberk of Mail would be amazing for Beregond!
