I've never used Tom Cotton before, so when his name appeared on the mandatory hero list, I thought I'd give him a try. He is a fine defender, and his ability leans towards hobbits, so I thought why not go for a full hobbit deck? Merry is a great attacker in Saga mode, starting at 4, and Sam Gamgee can take questing duties... plus he is generally awesome.

I've been working my way through the contracts in the past few solo leagues, so I thought why not focus on the unique hobbits in a Fellowship contract - thematic, I thought, though this does play against the "enters play" abilities many of them have.

Pippin, Rosie Cotton, Bill the Pony are obvious includes. Odo Proudfoot helps search for another ally, which is helpful (I can play hobbits if engaged with an enemy with higher engagement cost than my threat, thanks to Tom). Farmer Maggot gives a bit of direct damage, and 2, Bilbo Baggins is here for thematic reasons - I can't run hobbit pipe, but 2 never hurts - and Halfast Gamgee is... making up the numbers really.

Hobbit Cloak, Ring Mail and Staff of Lebethron can really pump up Tom, getting him to 6 against the right enemy. (Add Friend of Friends and he has 7# and 6 hit-points if Bill is in play!)

Dagger of Westernesse is enough for Merry to dispatch most enemies, and even put a dent in a Nazgul. He can also be assisted by Pippin or Farmer Maggot.

Fellowship of the Ring can be really powerful - as it's a fellowship deck you don't want your allies destroyed anyway, and the global boost helps compensate for some of the gentler hobbits' stats.

Frodo's Intuition is the only card draw, though search events like Raise the Shire do compensate. Sneak Attack combos well with Farmer Maggot, Odo Proudfoot and Tom's +2 for allies entering play. I did consider Gandalf as well, but I'm already over 50 cards. Finally Taste it Again! is worth it even if you just use it to get a second defence out of Tom, rather than for the +2.

In the end I plumbed for LoS Frodo Baggins for the boost - but it's not a particularly important choice, and I could see Black Riders Frodo coming in useful as an alternative.

I should add that I don't have the full cardpool - cards like The Shirefolk and no doubt many others would all be good additions!
