It turns out that Radagast is actually good. Not broken, but more than playable. The trick is to make sure that his Staff comes along for the ride.

The basic issue with Radagast is that he's too expensive. Unlike Treebeard -- who could have a blank textbox and still be excellent -- you get a mediocre stat line for 5 . Sure, he generates resources of his own, but it'll take 5 rounds to make back the initial cost. That's like paying full price for Resourceful, but worse.

With his staff, the math changes. For 7, we're generating 3 resources a turn. Full recoup in just 2.5 rounds, followed by never-ending bounty. This deck can survive just fine without a Steward.

Of course, just because he's worth paying full price for, doesn't mean we should. Instead, it's far more fun to use Leadership shenanigans to get him into play for nearly free.

Basic strategy: Use Timely aid and A Very Good Tale to quickly allies onto the board. Sneaking Gandalf on turn 1 to draw cards is absolutely worthwhile, to help speed up the engine.

From there, it's pretty straightforward but a lot of fun to play.

Substitutions: If someone else at the table needs Steward of Gondor, let them have it. Resourceful works well enough, even if you can't play both it and the Istari on turn 1.

(MotK) Gléowine can be replaced with Sméagol, especially if you need a bit of extra early-game questing. In that case, I'd suggest also adding The Master Ring to protect against an early Stinker.

nice secrecy-combo. i would add at least 1 faramir(l) ally, gives huge boost of questingpower. would replace for wellinghall. would also replace one gwaihir with landroval.

would add additional 3 wilyador ringsdb.com even if its more then 50 cards. you have no cheap eagle for flight of the eagles. if you use all tales, draw evry round with gleowine, use gandalf for cards and also the runes eagles are coming and head the dream yo can need 3 additional cards, that increase eagles.

@doomguard Thanks for the comments!

Re Faramir, I haven't need the extra quest so far. I've only used this deck in 2-player games, so that may skew my experience slightly, but so far I haven't needed the extra boost. But for quests that really need the extra , he's definitely a solid sideboard.

I use Wellinghall Preservers for questing, fighting in a pinch, and damage mitigation. They can shake off archery, and also heal any combat damage that Treebeard takes.

I've considered Landroval, but so far haven't needed him. I don't think he can save Gléowine, and by mid-game, I can survive without Denethor (and Gleowine) if needed. My partner runs Warden in her deck, so that mitigates any damage that happens to land on Eowyn. The calculus might change in solo, or if the quest punishes questing characters.

Wilyador is tempting, especially since I tend to have surplus / towards mid-game. It can also be very useful for early-game combat. However, I haven't found the trade-off worthwhile in the end. In particular, I use Flight with Descendant/Meneldor/Gwaihir so that I can get the extra benefits.

I love this deck!
I would recommend The Red Arrow which seems perfect in theme with Denethor and Eowyn.
