Imrahil13 1248

Imrahil13 has a newer deck inspired by this one: Lone Sam - Single Character Deck for Thematic Mount Doom

Behold. A fucntional single-character deck. One hero. Zero allies. All fun.

This deck started as a bit of a janky experiment to make a thematic single-character deck for the LotR Saga, so that Aragorn could escort the Hobbits to Rivendell, but it's really grown on me and has become one of my favorite decks.

Going 1-Handed, it's reliably beaten Passage Through Mirkwood and has gone 4-for-5 against Journey Along the Anduin as well as beating all three quests from Black Riders on the first go. It's certainly got some terrible match-ups out there (anything with character discard, anything that discards all attachments from play, or Sailing quests, for instance), but it's got some legs to stand on against many quests (especially in multiplayer, I suspect).

While I've got a lot of experience with Gray Wanderer, but I've always built GW to exploit ally-spam via Timely Aid and A Very Good Tale (e.g. see my Galdor and the Knights of the Ring Deck, which can reliably put 20+ resources worth of allies into play on the first round), I've never built a Gray Wanderer build without any allies.

While the deck starts a bit slow, it finishes quests with an Aragorn sporting over 30 attachments. The basic idea is to have Aragorn quest unexhausted with a potential for up to 16 WP (Strider, Celebrían's Stone, Necklace of Girion, Protector of Lórien, Song of Hope, then have him engage and destroy something via Roheryn.

This deck takes advantage of Ring of Barahir, which should be, when possible, your starting attachment via the Gray Wanderer contract. Not only will it give you important Lore access, but it can boost your HP easily up to double-digits as the game rolls on, since Aragorn can make good use of so many Artifacts (even the The Red Arrow, which becomes a solid +1 WP and +1 HP for a single resource).

The deck has the potential to make 10 Resources per round (Steward of Gondor, Resourceful, Necklace of Girion, The Day's Rising, and The Grey Wanderer, which it will frequently use to exploit Elven-light as thrice-per-phase card draw via Protector of Lórien. Dúnedain Pipe and Expert Treasure-hunter (always guess Attachment, since the only possible bad outcome is losing the one copy of Heed the Dream) offer additional card draw, as does Glamdring, which can be triggered multiple times per round as long as Aragorn has things to kill. It's not uncommon to finsih with an empty deck.

Some key Guarded cards are used here (all also being Artifacts to double-dip with the HP gains from Ring of Barahir), and once you get rolling they can be easily grabbed with either Mariner's Compass if on a location or with Roheryn when on an enemy. In cases where they are stuck on locations and you don't have the Compass, you can rely on Arod and Aragorn via Thorongil to wittle down the location. On that note, the most frequent Thorongil target is Aragorn, but Aragorn makes an excellent choice for certain quests as well.

The deck starts up a bit slowly, but once one of the draw-eninges starts to get rolling the deck gets out of hand quite quickly. Because it starts with such slow threat, it can usually hang in there and survive a few bad rounds of questing while it buys time and gets fully operational. There is always the chance for Thorongil to grab Aragorn to reset you back to starting threat early if you've got a particularly lethargic start with some failed questing.

The deck has no shortness of readies, with the Contract itself, three copies of Unexpected Courage, Heir of Mardil, and Magic Ring (hey, another artifact!), so Aragorn can frequently do several things a round.

All in all, a surprsingly fun deck that feels very thematic.

Nothing is more triggering than watching this deck waltz through the frustration of Mount Doom.
