This deck is based around Xanalor 2958 ''Back to Basics - A Killer Deck Using Cards from 1 Core Set'', with my own little tweaks and additions that bring it up to the required 50 or above cards for a customised deck. As I see it, the rules stipulate that when you custom build a deck you MUST have a minimum of 50 cards in your deck, so anything below that is against the rules, or do we pick and choose which rules we follow?

Please note I am new to the game, and have used the original deck made by Xanalor as a starting base, and am in no way taking full credit for this deck. Any suggestions, hints and tips are gratefully received.

Ally: All the Ally cards remain the same, but I have added 3x Wandering Took. These are extra cheap Ally cards you can use as ''cannon fodder'' or to increase your questing or attack by 1.

Attachment: Again I have bowed to Xanalor's better knowledge, but felt that there weren't enough in his deck. So I added 1x Celebrían's Stone which when added to one of the 2x The Favor of the Lady and attached to Éowyn, means she card virtually quest by herself, freeing up the rest of your Ally and Hero cards. I added 2x Power in the Earth, these are awesome in keeping in check the threat value if you have 2 or more locations cards in your staging area. I also included 2x Self Preservation, awesome if you are unlucky enough to draw 2 Hill Trolls!!

Event: Again I went more or less with Xanalor's choice, but I only have 2x Lore of Imladris as I feel there are enough cards to cover this function. I removed Will of the West as again I think there are plenty of times when you can shuffle your deck, and shuffling can go against you as much as for you. Instaed I put in 2x Valiant Sacrifice as when your cannon fodder leaves play, you can then draw 2 extra cards for your hand. Finally I have added 2x Radagast's Cunning as these two lower the threat value in the staging area of an enemy when you're questing, handy especially on quest 2B of Journey Down The Anduin when you have to place 16 progress tokens to beat it.

Well, it took me 5 or 6 games of 'Journey Along The Anduin' using this deck, but I have finally beaten it!! A couple of tips for new players struggling with this quest is to: 1: Keep your threat level as low as you can through out part 1 & 2 of the quest, and, 2: Get rid of the Hill Troll as quickly as you can (Forest Snare is an absolute boon if you can draw it early on) bearing in mind that there's a second Hill Troll lurking in your Encounter deck, so if possible, make sure you have at least 1 Ally per Hero in play to soak up any attacks. Stick with it, you will do it eventually!!

Normally one follows the rules of course, but at the same time if you're playing solo and having fun, what's the harm? Just don't brag about the victory w/o mentioning the cheat. I think the argument for using fewer than 50 cards in this case is that if you have only the core set you just have a lot fewer to work with. I can see it either way.

I don't see offhand anything you're doing against the rules.

FWIW, if I were going to play solo with just a Core set I'd try this deck: ringsdb.com —which, among other things, does have 50 cards. It also has some good advice on playing in general.

I do think that defeating EFDG with a solo, just-core deck is nearly impossible, and is going to require a large number of tries & a lot of luck. Otherwise, wait until you get more cards or play two or more handed (when losing a hero becomes less dire).

Welcome to the game!

Thank you Sfrug, I'll look at that one definitely. I agree, it's all about having fun, so I see your point there. On the other side of the coin, if you play continually with a 30 card deck, then you'll get used to the 'juicy' cards coming out fairly regularly, which doesn't help you to learn to manage your resources for future games, but I don't want to come across as a Gatekeeper here, and like you say, don't brag about a victory if you've, shall we say, 'stacked the deck in your favour'. Thank you again for your advice!
