Galadriel: Mithrandir... why the Halfling?

Gandalf: ...I don't know. Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid... and he gives me courage.

Lately, this scene from the first Hobbit Movie has been on my mind again, and I had to share it.

Because like Gandalf, I am afraid. Afraid how fascism is growing again, here in Europe but especially in the US Governmennt, a country where many in this community live. I'm afraid how hatred is fueled, people are demonized, media gets censored. Afraid what will come next.

Because this scene speaks against current narratives that call empathy weakness, say that strength must be demonstrated, violence is the way forward. Because we need to remind each other how much is possible if we are kind, if we love, if we care.

Because all I can do is to be like Bilbo. To act not with great power, but act with kindness and love in the small things, in my ordinary life. And to share that with others, and see how many around me are also like Bilbo.

And because I hope that I can give courage to someone. To keep them going, to let them know their not alone. Because I'm not just afraid like Gandalf, but also might be someones Bilbo

Because you might be someones Bilbo.

Do Not Be Afraid, Mithrandir. You Are Not Alone.

The real fascists are the Western central banks that own everything including media Outlets, and the Rockefellers control education curriculum in the United States. It's been the United States military versus this cabal since 1775. People like George soros, Klaus schwab, the Bilderberg Group, Etc, these are your real enemies.. (and the Federal Reserve)

Love the sentiment Roka.

Curious that you write that. Antifascism is the real and only fascism today. The one that actually murders people and promotes actual violence against free speech. Tolkien would have never stood for this. It needs to be uproot and cast away.

Fram: "Free speech... but not that kind of free speech!"

Everyone else: cool deck.

Thanks for posting this. My spouse fought so hard to make it through nursing school and have a job helping keep people alive. She now has some patients who feel emboldened to say horrible racist things to her face (often directly repeating the words of fascist pricks) because of the color of her skin and the way she speaks English. Anyone who would defend this behavior needs to take a long look in the mirror and ask some difficult questions. And no, lionizing a man who said some of those same horrible things that are being repeated does not make those things true or remotely acceptable.

Violence is never a solution to societal problems, history teaches that lesson sadly all too often. Still, we can all be judged for what we say and do, and encouraging other people to dehumanize those who are different from them is not what a hero does. If you read Tolkien and think Kirk was a hero, you need to dig a bit deeper. Aragorn, Gandalf, Galadriel; all of the heroes in his stories showed compassion and united the free peoples, not dividing them as a tool of political oppression.

Kirk didn't say anything horrible, or fascist, or racist, and was compassionate and tried to connect with all those who were willing to have a civil conversation. And he was shot for this and his faith. So yes: antifascism is per definition an assault against free speech. It replies to words with extreme violence, and its shameful that it's even contemplated next to Tolkien's themes of beauty, nobility, friendship and sacrifice. It's the polar opposit world view.

Antifacism is to my knowledge per definition any action that stands up against facism, some of them violent, most of them not. Even Tolkien speaking up against Hitler would therefore qualify as an antifacist.

There are many forms of peaceful protests, artists speaking up right now that would fall under antifacism. So I'm fascinated how you make this whole discussion about an single act of violence against Kirk when I didn't say anything about him in the deck description. I don't condone murdering him, but I also don't see him as a martyr but another of countless victims of gun violence.

Regarding Tolkien, the beauty of literature is that it can be applied to different contexts and be interpreted in different ways. I shared my interpretation for the current situation, you are free to disagree with it. But there's no reason to shame other interpretations.

I disagree with you, Roka. He was shot for his political ideas, whether we like those ideas or not. It's not a common victim of gun violence.

Tolkien was openly and bravely against fascism, and sure as heaven would have never been antifascist. Modern Antifascism has nothing to do with that. It's a terrorist organization that harrasses people on the streets, blocks cities, plunders and destroys and uses violence and murder to convey its message. Which is precisely what fascism did. You don't get a free moral pass on anything you do just because you label yourself "the good guy". I brought Kirk into this because its the most heinous act of political assassination of our time and was perpetrated by an antifa activist and because in the description you made, you referenced criticism towards showing empathy which was one of the main fake arguments used to misquote and slander Charlie Mirk after his assassination.

I'm sorry we have to come to this in a place that is supposed to be peaceful, and I mean no personal offence, but I find that naming a Tolkien-themed deck after a terrorist group empowered by fascist ideology at its core to be extremely disrespectful to the author and everything he stood for.

I was not referring to Charlie Kirk but a quote from Elon Musk that called empathy weakness. I think the problem for our discourse is that we have a different definition of Antifacism, you refer to one small group of people that see violence as a legitimate response, while I talk about a whole movement that is a "highly decentralized array of autonomous groups" (to quote Wikipedia) and includes many people that don't approve of violence.
