The story that follows is NOT Tolkien canon. That would be ridiculous.

The Backstory

In the far north of Middle-Earth, in the ancient kingdom of Arnor, many Vigilant Dúnedain prowl the lands, protecting the innocent folk. However, their young children also practice vigilance, waiting up for the great Gift-Giver: The-ho-ho-ho-den. But these are no mere toys made in Erebor. The-ho-ho-ho-den brings daggers and great armor for the young Vigilant Dúnedain to enjoy. But they do not know the greatest secret: most of these gifts are from Santa's helper Elf: Galadriel.

The Deck

When I saw the contract The Gifts of Galadriel spoiled, I immediately began thinking. The first deck I could come up with was a Vigilant Dúnadan deck. I have always loved his ability and began to think: what attachments can I put on our old friend Vigilante Dunadante?

Player Count

This deck excels in multi-player, where your Vigilant Dúnadan can defend the whole board with an Ancestral Armor and an Armor of Erebor. However, you need a side quest in the victory display for that, and The Gifts of Galadriel prevents the running of side quests. But in solo, when you generally have one enemy at a time, this deck is still quite powerful, even though Vigilant Dúnadan must exhaust to defend. (Suggestion: play alongside a deck that uses Alatar to complete a side quest right away.)

The Main Combo

Vigilant Dúnadan gets on the table, and the contract allows you to boost him to astronomical levels of power.

Opening Hand

Hard mulligan for Vigilant Dúnadan. Other good early-game cards are Light of Valinor, Galadriel, Long Lake Fisherman, Sword-sheath + a Weapon, and Errand-rider.

Ways to Set Up the Combo

Long Lake Fisherman, Legolas, Gandalf, and Steward of Orthanc all help fish out Vigilant Dúnadan. In multiplayer, if Gather Information is the chosen side quest, you can choose to fish him out. Other cards such as Galadriel and Erebor Toymaker help get attachments out more easily.

Questing

Each of your heroes quests, with Light of Valinor keeping Glorfindel ready. Many allies in this deck can also contribute, such as the Erebor Toymaker and Steward of Orthanc.

Defending

VIGILANTE DUNADANTE

Attacking

If in multiplayer, and a side quest is in the victory display, Vigilant Dúnadan can help attack, along with Glorfindel, Legolas, and the Bree-land Protector.

Resources

Mablung and Théodred ensure that you can pay for everything, and Errand-rider spreads the wealth where it needs to go.

Other Tricks

Bree-land Protector is insurance against a horrible shadow card. Raiment of War can go on a second Vigilant Dúnadan, or even the first before you find your more powerful armor. Elessar (which goes on Mablung, thanks to the contract) can buff the Vigilant Dúnadan, or ready him if there is no side quest in the victory display. Golden Hair can control your threat if it starts to rise. Gondorian Shield can turn Mablung into a secondary defender. Silver Belt might fire from time to time, and it is not restricted. (I.E. Killing off Galadriel to archery if she already quested, Bree-land Protector returning to hand because of shadow cancellation).

Summary

I'm glad I was one of the first people to post a deck with this contract. As a fairly recent joiner of the game, it always feels good to invent a deck that has never been done before (at least on Ringsdb). Thank you for reading my entire write-up, and enjoy staying up for Santa The-ho-ho-ho-den with the young Dunedain!

(This is the part of the write-up where I would wish everyone a happy early Christmas, but I am not willing to think about Christmas until after Thanksgiving)
