Power up Dúnhere and Legolas to take care of enemies in staging. It is hard in the first cycle to power up Dúnhere outside of leadership. It can snipe weaker enemies that don't come down until late or are prevented by quest effects. Otherwise Dúnhere is stuck assisting Legolas with kills. Thalin does help with weakening enemies. You can use Support of the Eagles to power Dúnhere up, though I mostly use it on Legolas instead. Quick Strike can sometimes allow Dúnhere to get rid of enemies after the staging step, but before resolving questing, while A Light in the Dark sends enemies back to the staging area after they have engaged and gotten a shadow card. This deck also has a full Eagle compliment to assist in the strong enemies that will come off the encounter deck in Return to Mirkwood. Goes well with a questing deck as a partner.
Use Radagast and Horn of Gondor to pay for the Eagle cards and heal them if need be.
Against CatC scenerio side board into leadership to get more power on Legolas and Dúnhere quickly. I like Swift Strike in the combat-heavy scenarios as well. Switch in Rohan allies in scenario where questing needs to be specialized.
