“Into the very fires of Mordor.”
This is a mostly thematic deck I have used to the Angmar awakened cycle so far in campaign mode.
The idea of this deck is simple. Frodo defends and increase your threat for excess damage and Aragorn fills in whatever else is needed. Once threat is very high he reduces it to the starting level. With the amount of readying they should both be questing turn 1 and used in combat asap. Turn 4 Gandalf with the white enters play thanks to the contract and helps Aragorn kill enemies and quest.
The contract is useful for the getting Gandalf and the White into play but it does more than that. First 3 rounds it can ready someone for emergency defence. All stats the heroes gain are used as Frodo won’t need to increase his threat as much and if threat is gained too fast he is still a 3/3 defender with shadow cancellation. Aragorn had 6 hitpoints which helps for undefended attacks and when he has lots of readying is a great secondary defender. He also has 4 attack which, when coupled with Gandalf, lets him kill most enemies in 1 round.
Attachments
Frodo: Burning brand, fast hitch, fatty lumpkin, spare pipe and Bilbo’s song.
Aragorn: strider, unexpected courage, dunedain pipe, seasoned forager, and the renewer. Seasoned forager is a very important card for the regular cost reduction.
Gandalf: his staff and the white. Note that Gandalfs staff can not gain resources due to the contract so usually it is for card drawer and shadow cancellation.
When piloting this deck focus on playing seasoned forager, readying and then questing once each hero has 1-2 readies on them in that order. When Gandalf enters play you quest for 10 willpower. I find this is hard for the encounter deck to get ahead of. If Frodo needs an unexpected courage or strider give it to him as he is your primary defender and starts with 3 willpower. Also any extra actions can be used to explore locations with Bilbo’s walking song.
The pipes are nice for a bit of control over your hand to fish for what you need and to reduce the cost of your allies with smoke and think.
I have not used the deck in multiplayer but Arwen gives sentinel to Frodo and Aragorn starts with it.
The rest of the deck is there to get that combo going fast and for versitility. Any turn you have a good amount of choices but not an overwhelming amount and as there are quite a few single cards each play season feels different. Wardens of healing were included for the final quests as Aragorn has so many hitpoints you can take undefended attacks easily. For theme you could swap them for healing herbs as there is often an extra action on your heroes floating about.

May 01, 2026I think with all of the threat increases, I would include some additional threat reduction. With all the expensive unique allies I can see you getting overrun by enemies unless you can get your threat down. |
May 01, 2026with 3 Unexpected Courage and 2 Fast Hitch around, the A Burning Brand against shadows, a Gandalf from round 4 and Frodo Bagginss ability it is very prepared for some enemies. lateron the healing will do what pierces the defense. but at acloser look i would add 1 or 2 Hobbit Pipe then the Smoke and Think might be worthy earlier, would even consider a Shadowfax and/or Wizard Pipe |
May 01, 2026I found wizard pipe did not do much. Hobbit pipe would help but Aragorn gave me all threat reduction I needed so more threat reducing events to use the pipe felt unnecessary. It might be better to cut the pipes but I was never sure what to cut them for. The pipes I found more fun then powerful. If I had deep knowledge that would help as card drawer did become an issue late game and something else that reduced the cost of cards so I could keep seasoned forager. |
May 01, 2026would reduce the Dúnedain Pipe by 2 add 1-2 Hobbit Pipe (not for its effect mostly to buff Smoke and Think for 0 cost, and having a 0-costcard more for riddles) would then add 1 Shadowfax if having 1-2 of the 4 cards:
then would replace 1-2 Power of Orthanc with Thorongil very flexible with aragorn, or even bilbo in some occasions |
its very thematic. starting with 27 thread does not make Aragorn this much effective. but throw in Gandalf + The White latest in round 4 it may be solid.
