These Merry, Pippin, Sam decks seem to easily build themselves. The only problem is fitting in all of the neat Hobbit/low threat tools provided by various saga expansions. So I've chosen to cherry pick them and "streamline" the strategy of the deck in order to handily beat at least the three Black Riders scenario, using cards up to Land of Shadow.

On to the strat!

Planning

  • Steward on Pippin please!

  • I often put the first Fast Hitch on Sam, especially during the first Black Riders quest in order to have him questing and ready for hide tests.

  • The first Protector also goes on Sam to help him ascend into super Sam.

  • I tend to save my Peace, and Thoughts until just before Refresh if possible. Otherwise, if you have the hitchs out or lots of Allies, you can occasionally use it during planning without a huge risk.

  • Also, I've been known to sneak attack in a non-Gandalf Ally if I also have A Very Good Tale (AVGT) (and no Gandalf) in order to use AVGT with the sneak attack'd ally... mostly because I'm impatient and I love A Very Good Tale. Otherwise, use A Very Good Tale with Gandalf during the refresh phase, before he goes away.

Questing

  • Faramir is bae

  • Protector of Lorien is dope as well

  • Gah, Faramir is great

  • Frodo's intuition is a neat bolster, though it's mostly for drawing cards.

  • Ally Swarm! I mostly chose this lineup of Allies for their Willpower stats (in combination with how they progress my game).

Location Control

  • None really...Just lots of willpower with faramir and allies.

Combat

Ok, so this is why we're here.

  • WESTFOLD OUTRIDER AND FEINT: So good. Since you have low threat, most enemies in the staging area (even black riders) will not engage you based on your threat. So you can wait until after the enemies attack step, then trigger Westfold Outrider (or feint the enemy) to pull an enemy that can't attack you. Then BOOM, kill it outright with an 8 strength Merry (4 base + 2 daggers), a 2 strength Sam, and/or some allies.

  • If you feel like being cheeky you can achieve this with sneak attack + Mablung as well. Feelin lucky? try using A Very Good Tale in this exact window to get Mablung onto the table... extremely, highly unlikely though... not recommended.

Refresh

  • Already mentioned but A Very Good Tale and Peace and Thought are nice at this point in the game... for discussed reasons.

Considerations

  • More Henamarth. He's just so damn good that he deserves to maybe overthrow Barliman ot the miner or any other "utility" card.

  • Gleowine in non-saga play for more draw power.

  • Maybe also Halfing determination if you're feelin weak.

Enjoy
