Warden of Arnor 5754

Warden of Arnor has a newer deck inspired by this one: The Valour of Numenor

Tank up Boromir with Shield/Warnings/Captain/Honour Guards, engage a couple of enemies to activate Amarthiul, once you hit 40 threat the Valour events let you pull off some crazy plays. Hour of Wrath can easily wipe the board with Aragorn in the mix. Keep your threat managed with Vigils, Favor and Gandalf. Obviously this deck is multiplayer only. Someone else needs to quest for you

This deck looks solid, and I love the synergy between Rohan Warhorse and Aragorn constantly dragging enemies over. My only worry is that resource generation is a bit lacking. Surely Steward of Gondor could fit in this deck?

I talk about that a bit in the linked blog post - It probably could, but I've tried swapping it in and found that I just end up with a pile of superfluous resources, so I'd rather use up the deck slots for something on the deck's actual focus. Plus I get some extra resources from Amarthiul, and all the important stuff you really want early is cheap (Shield/Warning/Warhorse), while the expensive cards are mostly things you save for when you really need them (Favor of the Valar/Path of Need/Hour of Wrath). Finally, not using Steward means someone else can have it in multiplayer.

Hm, I don't have Captain of Gondor, Gondorian Shield or Rohan Warhorse...would this deck still work without them?

Without Captain of Gondor? Sure. Without Rohan Warhorse? I wouldn't be as much of a killing machine but it'd still take a pretty hefty combat load. Without Gondorian Shield I'd be less confident. Of course part of the idea is having multiple ways to defend Boromir, it's just that the Shield is the best one. Might still work though, with the caveat that it would if nothing else be less consistent.

Hm, I guess Dunedain Warning couldn't quite substitute for the shield then? I've been trying to avoid getting Heirs of Numenor since I've spent so much money on the collection and also because the quests are infamously difficult...Aren't there some readying effects that might substitute for the Rohan Warhorse? I know Boromir can ready with just some threat...

The point is less readying in general and more readying Aragorn so you can keep using his ability to pull all the enemies over to you, since some of them may be engaged with other players or in the staging area. Re-readying Boromir wouldn't have the same effect in that context. A friendly Spirit deck playing Unexpected Courage on Aragorn would work. Of course Hour of Wrath still allows you to just tear through everything without exhausting when you play it, which is one reason I wouldn't be quite as worried about doing without the Warhorses (also because there aren't necessarily enough enemies in play for you to need that much readying, though this obviously depends on player-count). As for Warning vs. Shield, Shield is better because it gives Boromir 2 def for 1 resource instead of 1 for 1. How significant that is depends on what enemies you're facing, how much healing other players brought, etc. The bigger deal is the consistency thing - with 3xShield, 3xWarning, 1xCaptain and 3xHonour Guard that's 10 cards which effectively bolster Boromir's defences, so the chances of drawing at least on in your opening hand if you mulligan for them is like 99%. It also increases your chance of getting him multiple defence boosts which can be significant if dealing with bigger enemies. Take out the 3 Shields and it's going to be a bit less reliable. Still pretty reliable though, so it probably would still work most of the time. Honestly, no amount of theory-crafting can substitute for actual experience, so if you want to try it I suggest you do so and just see how it goes. Plus if you take out the Shield Feint would be one thing you could sub in as an alternative and that can obviously serve as a stop-gap measure if you don't have your defences up yet. Same applies to the Ranger of Cardolan of course.

I understand Path of Need being a clutch card and all that, but I just can't imagine ever having the resources spare to play it when I really needed it. Since you'd be pinching resources from Amarthuil for tactics cards anyways, the lack of resource generation just makes me think that you'd be better off running Thicket of Spears instead.
