7 - Return to Mirkwood (Progression Series)

Description

This is another fellowship continuing on in my goal to play through all of the quests in release order to learn how all (or most) of the cards interact with one another. The first fellowship for the quests in the core set can be found here, and it contains a slightly more detailed overview of what I'm going for with building these decks. As always, any feedback is appreciated so that I can continue to learn more!

I had never played this scenario before, so I went in blind and got completely destroyed a few times before settling on this combo. It doesn't include either of the heroes that we haven't used before, which is a bit of a bummer, but it was able to handle this quest fairly well the couple of times that I tried to make it work.

Like most of my decks that I've built, these are fairly straightforward decks, with one trying to handle the combat while the other quests for a ton. Eowyn with Steward of Gondor gets out all of the Rohan allies, Northern Trackers, and Rohan events needed (and Aragorn can help out if he get Celebrian's Stone). Theodred is usually tossing resources over to Thalin to fund the Eagles over in the combat deck. Hold onto Test of Will for any of the nasty treacheries (raising threat by 8 in particular) and use Gandalf and The Galadhrim's Greeting to reduce threat whenever possible. Since this deck has many more resources and ways to reduce threat, it will be in charge of watching Gollum for the majority of the game, pretty much just during phase two will you want the combat deck to have him (or Stage 4 once the questing deck is creeping up in threat).

I haven't gotten to use Eagles yet in any of my decks other than the concessional Winged Guardian, so I decided to go all in on them for this deck. Gimli and Thalin with the occassional Theodred resource can get them on the board fairly quickly and buff up Eagles of the Misty Mountains to be a solid defender/attacker. Feint, Quick Strike and Forest Snare can help deal with the nastier enemies until they can be dealt with by either Gimli or an Eagle. Beravor and Gleowine should be used to help fund card draw for the questing deck to find all of their toys to break through locations, and Gandalf exists to help with threat in a pinch (though this deck is usually fairly starved for resources and relies on The Galadhrim's Greeting to help it out).
