Apfelbaum 20

Apfelbaum has a newer deck inspired by this one: Solo deck for saga expansions

Gandalf and his hobbit friends set out for a journey through middle earth with pipes and the finest herbs in their luggage. On their adventures they always follow their golden rule: If you can't beat them, smoke them.

A semi-serious deck that actually works. The name of the game is "control": load up Gandalf with his attachments and Unexpected Courage while Frodo handles defending. The threat increases caused by Frodo defending can be dealt with by Smoke Rings and Galadhrim's Greeting. Ideally you only optionally engage enemies in order to get extra card draw and the extra attack from Dagger of Wesernesse.

The goal in early game is to stall until you get Wizard Pipe and Steward of Gondor on Gandalf. Once this combo is in place you should be able to start taking over the scenario and play whatever cards you consider necessary for the scenario. Word of Command helps with fetching key cards while Imladris Stargazer can help with manipulating your deck for Flame of Anor.

Pippin gives access to Lore sphere with utility cards like Fast Hitch, Mine of the Iron Hills and Erebor Hammersmith. In most scenarios you just want to get Fast Hitch out as well as Henamarth Riversong. The other cards are more situational depending on the quest and so Pippins resource more often than not are used to pay for neutral cards as well as spirit if he gets Song of Travel attached to him. His hero ability also helps with stalling in the early game until Gandalf is online. Shadow and Flame became a very easy quest with this deck.

The downside of this deck is combat especially if it is necessary to kill enemies right from the get go. However, with some chump blocking it can work out alright if you can get Boromir and Dagger of Westernesse onto the table.

Don't use this deck in multiplayer! Besides potentially annoying your friends with using hero Gandalf your turns also take a while as you figure out the optimal play for the round. It is a control deck that gives a lot of options each turn and certainly feels like solving a puzzle every now and then.

This deck also works with the quests in the Black Rider expansion with some minor tweaks. Just use Galadriel instead of Frodo.
