My journey to win the Shadow and Flame quest solo took a few different deck iterations to achieve. I’m only using the cards that were printed up until that set to beat it.

Initially I first ran headlong into the Balrog equipped with my Glorfindel powered secrecy deck. While this deck is fun, and good for many challenges it was not up to tackle the fearsome might of the Balrog. And while I could dance around/away from the enemy for a little while with all the threat reduction that deck packs, it became clear from the design of the Quest I’d need to come back with the power to tackle the Balrog head-on.

My next thought was that with the right heroes and equipment I could stack up a deck that would be able to stand toe to toe with the Balrog and gradually beat him down. I attempted this with Elrond, Dain (for defense), and Gimli (for beatdown). While I got close once or twice, what I found is that inevitably I’d get nailed by some combination of multiple Balrog attacks, and/or attachment discard Treachery and/or Shadow events. Dain, while a solid defender with lots of health suffers from not being a Lore hero and thus not able to wield a Burning Brand without a Song.

Thus I arrived at the deck you see here. If I couldn’t evade, or stand toe to toe with the Balrog, the remaining option would be to feed him a stream of cheap and disposable allies. With Lore, Tactics, and Leadership you have 12 one resource allies to start with, not counting critical 2-cost allies (such as the Miner of the Iron Hills) and extra copies of Glowine. Glandalf, Sneak Attack, and Beorn were also key to flesh out the lineup.

Essentially the deck was a resource and card-draw machine to quest through the first 2 locations of the scenario. And then with a couple copies of Gandalf and a wealth of resources to pay for him and Beorn I alpha-struck the Balrog for 1 massive attack of 22 damage (19 after his shield). In two more rounds I snuck up his damage using my last Gandalf, and a last Beorn-strike to put him at 23 damage after his regenerate with all 3 of my heroes ready.

At this point I needed to flip 1 out of the top 3 cards that was not a 1 cost event, and got there (with Citadel Plate) on the last flip! It was a nailbiter, and brutal, but a solid win. Gut-wrenching twists included the turn of my Alpha-strike (with Gimli equipped with double Dwarrowdelf Axe’s) flipping the “discard all attachments” treachery.
