This is the deck I used during my Single Core Series Progression Playthrough as I played Flies and Spiders from the Hobbit Saga.

Spiders are nasty so my strategy was to kill them while they were in the Staging Area with Thalin and Dúnhere. The bats are no match for Thalin's axe. Keep your threat low and don't play allies until you are in stage 2. Shadow of the Past is the secret weapon, once you kill some bats you can kill them again the next round.

Spear of the Mark comes to mind for Dúnhere if you wanted to keep enemies in the staging area.

You are correct, I did play that one. But The Hobbit sagas came out before it. I had to backtrack in the progression series to play The Hobbit saga.
