Beorn 14072
This is my take on a Dúnedain/Trap deck. There are undoubtedly more powerful versions of this archetype out there, notably Seastan's Dúnedain Trappers, but I decided to go a slightly different direction here. The foundation of the deck remains the combination of Damrod and Amarthiul - a powerful duo to be sure. The most obvious difference between this deck and most of the others in this archetype is the absence of Steward of Gondor. I play predominately multiplayer games these days, and there is simply too much demand for that card to warrant inclusion here.
Fortunately, this deck has multiple solutions to help mitigate the absence of this staple. Damrod's built-in cost reduction helps us gets traps into play early, which then helps us draw into our other critical pieces. Bifur's resource smoothing is essential to pay for more expensive Lore allies, for which Damrod's ability is not help. Once we get two engaged enemies, Heir of Valadnril and Amarthiul's resource acceleration become effective, which further fuels the fire. Forest Snare and Entangling Nets are essential here as they make it much safer to engaged multiple enemies. Additionally, the Armored Destrier and A Burning Brand help protect us in quests with troublesome shadow effects.
Any Dúnedain deck without Aragorn for Celebrian's Stone and Sword that was Broken is going to be a bit light on willpower, and this is no exception. Still, we have multiple allies with 2 willpower so this deck should be passable in that regard. The attachments strategy is fairly straight forward. Bifur gets Gondorian Shield and a Burning Brand, to help with combat. If he's not needed, feel free to commit him to the quest. Amarthiul receives the Armored Destrier and is the best solution for actually killing things. Don't forget to save Forest Snare for the largest, most troublesome enemies.

Sep 16, 2016The shield is a hold-over from an earlier version of this deck which included Steward of Gondor. If you are not playing Steward, and no one else at the table is using a Gondor hero as their defender, feel free to swap this out for Dunedain Warning. One of my friends is almost always using Beregond, so I will typically leave this card in, to ensure that he gets his shield. |
Sep 16, 2016It's too bad you couldn't find a way to fit Merry into this deck to complete the "Back to the Future" theme. I am, of course, referring to Merry's full name "Meriadoc" for the "Doc" component. Did I over explain my thinking? Probably. I like the deck and the podcast and the blog. Keep up the good work. |
Sep 16, 2016Didn't even read the list; you win on the name alone. |
Sep 16, 2016Overall, good deck. |
Why gondorian shield? Wouldn't it be better to have something like dunedain warning? (as since bifur is not gondor it provides the same benefit). Also, you could play a warning first turn, without waiting to engage an enemy to activate Amarthiúl.
