I have played various incarnations of Hobbits over the years. This deck originally had Tactics Merry. That was prior to Spirit Merry being published. Since then, I have used Spirit Merry.
The idea is to maintain secrecy for as long as possible and cheat as many strong allies into play, or else get Resourceful on characters so the more costly allies can be bought outright. It usually does pretty well although there are some quests where the damage gets dealt out too quickly and they cannot cope.
Sam can be a useful defender if he has a Hobbit cloak and more so if he has a Staff of Lebethron, although his enemy needs to be dealt with quickly or else you are losing three questing. Pippin's card draw is really useful and Merry's versatility is also a big plus.
