This is a variation of a mono-spirit Cirdan deck I made a while ago, but this time I gave it a Rohan twist. Theodred gives us easy access to Steward, as well as an extra resource, which is great. The attachments are pretty self-explanatory. The allies are the usual Cirdan good stuff like Ohauh Gandalf, Northern Tracker and Treebeard, but the idea here is to use Gamling, mostly in conjunction with Narya, to recycle Rohan allies like the Escort and Hama. Best case scenario, with Gamling, Narya, Hama and Escort we can consistently recycle 4 willpower and 2 defenses for 5 each round for 5 resources, which shouldn't be hard to pay for with Steward, Theodred and Elven-light. Even if you don't have all these pieces, Gamling can still recycle one of these 2 allies, and of course you still have Gandalf, Treebeard and Glorfindel. As always, all feedback is welcome.

May 09, 2016Thanks! I certainly considered each Rohan ally when making the deck, and to be honest I think the Horse-breaker would be kinda unnecessary in solo. Do you think Light of Valinor wouldn't be enough? So far I've had no problem using Light of Valinor to keep Cirdan ready for the quest phase. |
May 10, 2016No, Light of Valinor certainly accomplishes the same goal, I just like the Horse-breaker for thematic consistency (that and the The Riddermark's Finest would be the two other primary Rohan targets for Gamling), mechanical consistency (you won't always see the Light of Valinor early, and you don't have Unexpected Courage in, so another way to ready your hero makes it more likely you get one when you need one), and overall flexibility, (the horse-breaker isn't just limited to getting a second action out of Cirdan, he could help ready Arwen/Theodred to protect against a Necromancer's Reach, say, or get you another attack/defense in combat). Certainly not a make-or-break card either way. While we're on the topic of Rohan synergies, one of the most tried-and-true old combos (especially in Leadership/Spirit Rohan decks) would be Sneak Attack + Éomund. It's most useful in decks with powerful Rohan heroes-- your Escorts are toast after the quest, anyway, and you're not gaining a ton of willpower by enabling yourself to commit guys like Elfhelm, Gamling, and Háma to the quest. Theodred is kind of wimpy to devote a 2-piece combo just to get an extra use out of his 2 attack, (and that's what you have Snowmane for, besides). Have you played the deck much? I guess I'm curious how often you find Theodred's leadership resources sitting idle with only 12% of the deck devoted to leadership cards. |
May 10, 2016I originally had the Sneak Attack, Eomund combo, but soon found that it was superfluous. As you said, there's not much point in readying 1 Rohan hero and maybe a couple allies. So far I've only played it against Voyage Across Belegaer, 1 loss and 1 win. Theodred's resource normally ends up paying for expensive Leadership allies and neutral allies, which I always play ASAP. It hasn't been a porblem so far. |
May 24, 2016Very nice deck, the Gamling trick didn't come through for me every time but still has some good power even without it. On several occasions I had 6 people to combat with after they had all committed to the quest (Treebeard, Gimli, 2 allies + Narya, Cirdan + LoV and Theodred + Snowmane). I used core set Gandalf instead of OHaUH version. Beat all 3 Grey Havens quests with ease (VaB 1/3, FoN 1/1, RoGH 1/1), although Theodred took the plunge while Raiding the Grey Havens |
I love it!
One thought: Westfold Horse-Breaker would be a lot of fun in this deck, too. Quest with Cirdan for four, then discard the Horse-breaker to ready him, exhaust Gamling to save the Horse-breaker, and use Cirdan/Narya in the combat phase to ready Gamling again (along with Háma, potentially, which would give you three defends a round instead of just two.)
