Darkling Door 6147

This is a thematic deck built for an ongoing series on my blog, Darkling Door.

Theme: Bilbo telling tales of his adventures

Played Against: Nightmare Escape from Mount Gram

"He took to writing poetry and visiting the elves; and though many shook their heads and touched their foreheads and said ‘Poor old Baggins!’ and though few believed any of his tales, he remained very happy to the end of his days, and those were extraordinarily long."

The Last Stage, The Hobbit

Strategy

A Fireside Song deck built specifically to allow Bilbo to rescue everyone in Nightmare Escape from Mount Gram.

Sideboard

I moved all of the Allies, Items, and Artifacts to the Sideboard to make it easier to play this deck against Escape from Mount Gram on OCTGN.

Tips

  • Which card you fetch with The One Ring's Setup effect depends on which cards you have in your opening hand:
  • You need to get Song of Travel and then Fireside Song on Bilbo Baggins as soon as possible. Prioritize playing them over all other cards!
  • Other than those first two, it's okay to hold back a few Songs until Love of Tales shows up, but balance that against your willpower needs moment-to-moment
  • You'll want to try to get at least two copies of Resourceful into play before your threat hits 20, this will give you plenty of resources to play those expensive Dwarf Allies later in the game.
  • When possible, avoid defending with Bilbo Baggins until you have played Inner Strength on him, otherwise he may be vulnerable to Shadow Effects which might steal his Attachments from him.
  • Once your engine is running, use Guarded Attachments to stall on Stage 2 until your Capture Deck is empty.

Hah! I love this, and strangely I've tried the same concept as a Grey Wanderer and as a non-contract deck, but with tactics Bilbo (unpolished, not working well, and not worth publishing!). Glad to see you pulled some wins out of the scenario. Think it will hold up against other quests?

@GrandSpleen I'm not sure! It's got a pretty high starting threat and no way to lower it, so I'm a little skeptical, although it might be possible to make some tweaks to fix that. I wasn't planning on trying it outside of Mount Gram, but not you've got me curious because I'm not sure.
