A fun eagles deck that combines combat, location control, and enough questing power to be viable as a general-purpose solo deck.

Starting Hand

You need Radagast's Staff ASAP. If you don't have it or Word of Command in your starting hand, then you'll almost always want to mulligan for a new hand.

Tips and Tricks

  • Try to get an Eagles of the Misty Mountains into play ASAP.
  • Wizard Pipe + Messenger Raven = repeatable card draw, plus it triggers Radagast's ability.
  • Using the above combo, you can name "event" or "attachment" to deliberately discard Meneldor or Descendant of Thorondor. Next turn, play Gwaihir to boomerang the discarded eagle in and out of play, returning it to your hand and ready to play again the following turn.
  • Use Wizard Pipe to line up a high cost card for Flame of Anor. Can also be used to set up the previous tip.
  • Use Wizard Pipe to put Gandalf or an eagle or your choice on top of your deck, then put that ally into play with Gwaihir's Debt.
  • When using the above with Gandalf, don't forget that unlike Sneak Attack, he returns to your hand at the end of the round rather than phase. This means you can potentially quest with him and attack (or defend) with him in the combat phase via Flame of Anor. And there is also an opportunity to play Word of Command on him during the refresh phase when he readies, but before he leaves play.
  • See my review of Flight of the Eagles. It outlines some interactions with several other cards in this deck.
  • Use The Long Defeat on the penultimate quest stage to restore 5 to your characters, or else draw cards. Between Loyal Hound, Giant Bear, chump blocking, and using a jacked up Eagles of the Misty Mountains to defend, I found that I didn't really need much more healing than this for most quests. If the scenario only has one quest stage, just replace it with something else like Map of Rhovanion.
