Thematic Saga Series: Deck 1

A Shadow of the Past

Series Overview

Welcome to the Thematic Saga Series, where I will be taking the most thematic decks possible against a modified Saga Campaign, on DragnCards. Here are the rules for this Campaign:

1: Your decks must be as accurate as possible to the books. So in A Shadow of the Past's case, because it takes place in the Shire, I will only be using Hobbit allies.

2: I am allowed to change heroes to fit the theme and I will not be incurring the +1 threat penalty while swapping heroes this way. For example, if I used an ally version of Legolas or Gimli in The Breaking of the Fellowship, I could swap heroes so I can us them as heroes in The Uruk-Hai.

I follow the rest of the rules for a standard Campaign.

The Theme

For this deck I decided not to use Merry, because he only shows up at the end of the scenario. I chose a few Hobbit allies because I didn't think the deck could function without them, (spoiler alert, it couldn't) and the only one that really fits with the theme is Gaffer Gamgee. Wandering Exile is there representing an exiled Noldor who meets the hobbits with Gildor. I feel like all the events make sense, besides maybe Tighten Our Belts.

Game Notes

In my game, I was able to get Resourceful and Fast Hitch on Sam quickly, which helped to get some allies in, and was very useful for those pesky Hide tests. Other notable cards that I got out before round three were Frodo's Intuition, Hobbit Cloak and a copy of The Shirefolk. After that things flowed smoothly, and I believe the only ally that I did not play was Halfast Gamgee. I ended up engaging and killing 2 Nazgul and a few Crows throughout the course of the game.

My score was 130:

13 Threat,

12 Rounds,

2 Victory Points.

Boons Earned: Mr. Underhill (More Thematic)

Burdens Earned: The Ring Draws Them

Hope you enjoy, stay tuned for the next scenario, The Old Forest.

I love this idea and have wanted to do this for a while, but I don't think I have enough of the game to make the theme work properly and still win the quest even on easy mode, anyway great deck and I look foreword to seeing your next entry in this series!

@West from the Sea, Thanks! This is the first time I've ever done a playthrough like this, and I'm glad to see someone's interested. I have already played The Old Forest, and I'll publish the deck later today.

@serpico, Thanks! I didn't use Merry because he is not in this scenario until Stage 3, so I decided to forego him altogether. Don't worry, he is in the next decks. (:
