Darkling Door 6446
This is a thematic deck built for an ongoing series on my blog, Darkling Door.
Theme: The Spearmen of Rohan
Played Against: Nightmare The Antlered Crown
"Without a word or cry, suddenly, the riders halted. A thicket of spears were pointed towards the strangers; and some of the horsemen had bows in hand, and their arrows were already fitted to the string. Then one rode forward, a tall man, taller than all the rest; from his helm as a crest a white horsetail flowed. He advanced until the point of his spear was within a foot of Aragorn’s breast."
—The Riders of Rohan, The Two Towers
Strategy
This is a post-errata solo Háma / Thicket of Spears combo deck suitable for Nightmare play.
Mulligan for: Thicket of Spears. You don't need it right away, but you'll want it for the endgame, and this deck has very little card draw.
Tips
- You want to get some 2 Allies down as early as possible, just be aware that they cost all of your resources for the turn, so balance it with your need to defend any Enemies that might show up.
- In the early game, Feint is far more valuable than Thicket of Spears since it leaves you resources for next round. You may consider using one use of Háma's ability for Feint instead of Thicket if you're getting lots of Enemies in the early game.
- Most rounds, you want to hold back Háma in case you need to kill something and then bring a cancel card back.
- That said, don't be afraid to quest with Háma if you have an attack cancel in hand and need the progress. His boosted 2 can sometimes be worth the risk.
- Saruman is your get-out-of-trouble card, whether it's to help clear out some big Enemies or to break Location lock.
- Thicket of Spears is vital for large Enemy counts, but it costs all of your resources for the round, so you need to make sure you're either set up when you play it or can use it to gain the upper hand.
Even post-errata, the Háma / Thicket of Spears combo remains viable. This deck is pretty powerful on its own, and I could see it working well against other quests as well, or in multiplayer.
