Seastan 42164

A multiplayer deck designed at the request of a Patreon supporter looking for a deck with Grimbeorn the Old and a bit of healing.

Pretty straightforward to pilot: Mulligan for a Master of the Forge, which will keep your Damrod-trap engine going. Quest with Eowyn and Damrod while Grimbeorn defends and kills stuff. You could say this deck was designed specifically to make Valour of the North shine, but I came across the card after the deck was mostly built as a happy coincidence.

In late game, you might want to be killing more than 1 enemy per round in order to pull your weight, in which case you can replace one of Grimbeorn's weapons with Rohan Warhorse. As long as you first defend a weak enemy that you can kill with Grimbeorn's response, the Warhorse will allow you to ready to defend a second attack (an maybe kill that enemy too!).

Oh yeah, and don't forget Éowyn's response!

Very excited to try this out since I've mostly ignored Valour of the North. There are some great moments to be had with that card!

I like that you can swap out Eowyn pretty easily in a pick-up game where someone else really wants to use her in another deck.

@thanatopsis Sort of... whichever hero you swap Eowyn out for will have to be noble if you want to use Proud Hunters (and I've found that Grimbeorn despreately wants some kind of resource acceleration, especicially in multiplayer where you have the opportunity to trigger him multiple times every round). Also, whichever hero you swap Eowyn out for will inevitably make the Dagger of Westernesse a bit weaker.

Is Valor of the North really that good? It's only +3 Attack or Defense for a single attack, I've ended up scrapping one use only cards similar to it for other decks (Looking at you unseen strike).

When I first read it I thought that it applied on the attack and defense, but it only says "Until the end of this attack.", so it doesn't stick around after Grimbeorn defends because that attack is technically over and Grimbeorn's attack back is considered a new attack.

Am I missing something rules wise? Or was I just too negative on one time use trading a card for + 3 defense or attack. Is it more important on the defense aspect?

@TheRaven476 I'm not sure I'd say it's that good. It's just that I think trap decks are one of the best opportunities for it to see the table. I originally had Unseen Strike in this deck, but dropped it for Valour of the North because of the latter can be used for defense as well.

You could trade it for Blade Mastery for a similar type effect that will work for both the defense and the attack, but I was trying to keep the cost curve down due to Grimbeorn's expensive ability.

@TheRaven476I was coming from the position that Valour of the North will be a fun bomb card at GenCon. Seeing it hit the table at a critical moment is the kind of convention story people won't forget.
