In the finale of the Hachette Partworks magazine series, our heroes find themselves in Bree. Will this be the quest where it all comes together for this troubled magazine? You can watch me play through all 4 issues here: https://bit.ly/2W1xlSi
The Pre-Con
As in Issue 3, the magazine suggests a deck. It's not a great one - not that this one is, either. Although Aragorn is a good thematic fit, the version is better suited to a card pool with very few allies.
I did attempt a couple of dummy turns with the pre-con, and found it lacked the readying and stat boosts an ally-light deck needs. The encounter deck is all enemies and enemy-fetching treacheries, so the player deck needs to be ready to deal with an enemy. It's also not a long quest, so Aragorn's threat reduction is not really necessary - even with the threat increase from Bill Ferny.
The Concept, Such As It Is
The magazine deck building rules change in this issue to be 30 cards. Again, the pool is very light on allies. Though I could have slotted in a Son of Arnor, there are so many stat-boosting attachments in the pool for a 4-hero lineup that I preferred to lean on the heroes to do it all.
Two heroes have built-in readying triggers, so a smattering of other readying with Unexpected Courage and - for once - Grim Resolve was enough action advantage for this quest.
Everything else is basically my Issue 3 deck with some extra cards for Aragorn in there. Though a 30-card limit would, in theory, open up deck building possibilities, the limited and oddly distributed pool once again pushes me towards a hero-centric build with some extra cards to bring up the count.
All Ferny, No Gandalf
Yeah, I know, where's Gandalf? Again, as part of our deal with AJ, he got to keep the Grey Pilgrim. I had so much fun with Sneak Attack Farmer Maggot that I had to bring him again.
Had I had Gandalf in my magazine card pool, he's a perfect fit for this quest. Nuking Bill Ferny from orbit with a grumpy Istar is a good feeling.
Bringing It to a Close
I really enjoyed playing through the magazines, even with the editorial problems of the product. You'll have to watch the video to get my full thoughts. But there is one thing I didn't mention there: The small deck sizes do make for a good introduction to rudimentary deck building for new players. For their limitations, both the Issue 3 and Issue 4 decks are straightforward builds with good outcomes that a new player would find encouraging.
Thanks for going on this odd journey with me! I hope you enjoyed the videos and these little writeups on the two decks I built for the adventures.
