This is the second deck in my "Dream Starter Decks" series. You can find the first deck here: Race to Rivendell. The idea was to build a second round of starter decks to complement the original four from FFG (Elves, Rohan, Gondor, and Dwarves) with the constraint that they can only use cards outside of (our best guess of) the reprinted content:
-
SoM
-
KD+D
-
HoN+AtS
-
VoI+R-m
-
SoH+H
-
SitE+VoM
-
OHaUH+OtD
Instead of just throwing a bunch of "good stuff" cards into these decks, I wanted to make them somewhat thematic and also capable of beating a few quests (not just PtM or the Oath) on their own.
This deck is built around two themes that go nicely together:
-
The multi-trait cards from the Harad cycle, in particular The Free Peoples
-
Thurindir and the (good) side quests from the Harad cycle, in particular The Storm Comes.
The idea is certainly not new, but works quite well in this restricted card pool. There are many good allies that were "left out" of the revised content, many of them highish-cost, and this deck can actually play them reliably by starting the game with The Storm Comes. The other side quests are great too: if you can clear Keep Watch then both Beorn and Vigilant DĂșnadan will be very happy.
Try to get Steward of Orthanc in your opening hand if you're worried about having enough starting willpower. Otherwise Treebeard is always good to mulligan for.
