Very few cards are essential, except for Gandalf himself, and his attachments, particularly Shadowfax, who lets everyone at the table benefit from Gandalf and lets you use him three times. Merry and Galadriel are more than enough to give you threat room for Gandalf to stay in play indefinitely,
