While perusing the Doug Beer order I came across the Alep reddit thread answering questions about the materials included in that order. (Shire's Reckoning is a must for anyone looking over the list btw, and that's my unbiased opinion) Seastan commented that he was proud of the three big archetypes that Alep had created (Bree, Minstrel and Easterling) that essentially opened up decks that could go without defending, without attacking or without questing.
That obviously raised the question in my mind of what about a deck that doesn't do any of those three things? And with that, this deck was born!
The Goal: If you choose to run this deck, the goal is to NEVER exhaust anyone (Ally or Hero) to quest, attack or defend. Even if it would benefit you in the moment, this deck refuses to play the game by the normal rules.
So far (something of a new deck) this deck has beaten the following quests while questing 0 times, attacking 0 times, and defending 0 times:
Journey Through Mirkwood Journey Along the Anduin Escape from Umbar Intruders in Chetwood
If you choose to take up the challenge of this deck, the following tips may help you out:
Early Game: The most common way to lose is threating out early on. It is vital to get Blue Staff out as quickly as possible so you can reduce the threat penalty for questing unsuccessfully each round. After that, you are aiming to get Emissary of the East and as many easterling allies (Luin Cultist and Variag Recluse) , out as you possibly can. If you can survive the early rounds, you should be able to build up questing failure wall of 5-8 that prevents you from raising your threat and allows you to use the blue staff for other endeavors.
Songs: It is tempting to play songs as quickly as you can, but they NEED to be parsed out by Tom Bombadil during different phases to keep dealing damage, or to heal his friends. This deck can drop a surprising amount of damage in quick bursts when this deck is played conservatively.
Barliman: Barliman Butterbur is my favorite hero in the game. I have so many decks that revolve around him. He is solid here because he has lots of healing available from Pint, Ioreth and Tom Bombadil, and he helps you draw the cards you need to keep moving forward.
Tricks and Tips:
Peace, and Thought This card is bonkers good in this deck. Exhausting 2 heroes is usually pretty rough, but here it isn't since our heroes don't like to do things. It also triggers Emissary of the East if Alatar is one of the two exhausted heroes.
Luin Cultist is one of the best cards from the last pack I never see people talk about. Considering they can keep Word of Command in your deck and make it a free play, they are phenomenal. Getting three of them out ASAP is usually a goal of mine.
