Probably the grindiest control deck I've ever built, this solo build is also impressively resilient.
Mulligan for Light of Valinor, Nenya, or Elven Light. An ideal hand with have all of these, plus maybe a Mirkwood Longknife.
You want Argalad pulling double duty as quickly as possible. Quest without exhausting w/ Light of Valinor, then ping an enemy after staging for threat reduction and damage. Do it more & better with a couple of Mirkwood Long-knife.
In the meantime, Galadriel is using her ability to draw an extra card and keep your threat at the same level as long as possible. This will help you stay below the engagement cost for most enemies, aka leaving them in the staging area to get show. The extra card draw helps you find your pieces.
Arwen is almost always questing, though she's incredibly useful for pumping out extra resources. Stick Protector of Lórien and Lembas on her, and she's a solid defender as well. Between your many Elven-lights and copies of Glorfindel, you should never want for cards to dump.
And that's it, really. You have the ability to draw through your whole deck twice, thanks to Will of the West. Thanks to all the threat reduction, it's possible to end a quest at 0 threat, which is a special feeling. By the end of the quest you'll likely have your Guardian of Ithiliens kitted out with Ranger Bows and helping Argalad blow up the staging area.
The deck's main weaknesses are against enemies that make multiple attacks. You don't want to get hit, at least until you've got an extra blocker in Jubayr, Treebeard, or the elf brothers.

Sep 17, 2017You're right to be skeptical! Looking over my box, as a solo deck it's beaten Shadow & Flame (without every engaging the Balrog!), all of the Dwarrowdelf cycle, Steward's Fear, Across the Ettenmoors, Shadow of the Past, The Mumakil, and The Black Serpent. Probably a few more! It fares really badly against pretty much anything using the "Time" mechanic or enemies with Toughness, though. I think it's narrowly beaten the Dunland Trap, but that's about it. |
Interesting turtle deck here. I like this style of play on occasion and I've played a variety of turtle decks, but I don't think I've seen one that relied on direct damage for its endgame ultimately. I'm also curious about what quests this deck has defeated.
