This is my deck to tackle the Hobbit Saga, using just cards from the Core Set and the two Hobbit boxes.

Beorn is a incredible strong hero for this saga, because he can defend all this little nasty Goblins and he can't be poisoned from the Spiders. He can handle most combat without needing any attachments, so i decided to use an Leadership ally swarm, boosted by Faramir, to have enough quest power. I also considered Théodred+Aragorn, but decided to go with Thorin Oakenshield and Balin. Beside being more thematic, they have more starting willpower and most of my allies are dwarves, so it's not to hard to get five out. Also, i get acces to card draw with King Under the Mountain, and Balin helps Beorn to live longer.

Against the big enemies (Trolls, Bolg) I chump blocked with the Snowbourn Scouts and the Gondorian Spearmans. Their direct damage is also helpful against this small Goblins, especially in combination with Swift Strike and Longbeard Orc Slayer.

The deck performed in general pretty well, in "Over the Misty Mountains Grim" and "Flies and Spiders" it was set up very fast and the encounter deck had no chance. "We must away, Ere break of day" was pretty close, after Wind-whipped rain destroyed my Steward and King under the Mountain, I still managed to win with 48 threat, after chumping once with Kili and twice with Fili.

"Dungeons deep and Caverns Dim" created many problems and Gollum killed Bilbo once, but this quest is just brutally random if you don't build for it. At "The Lonely Mountain", I used Grim Resolve in the last round to use Faramir twice and then swing with everybody against Smaug, so I could get away with 3 treasures. Against "Battle of Five" armies I needed two attempts, the first time I couldn't make any progress early in the game and was overrun by enemies.
