Neuter the encounter deck with discard and cancellation. Firyal is the best, but Celduin Traveler and Ithilien Lookout are cheap and can do the same effect.
Plus, the old standbys: A Test of Will and Hasty Stroke. And Thrór's Key to further get rid of troublesome location effects.
1x allies aren't super consistent, but they reduce the chances of missing with Timely Aid, and they improve your overall stats throughput, which helps manage the staging area.
