"This is the story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing or saying things altogether unexpected" - The Hobbit

Concept

After returning from Erebor, Bilbo loved adventure and spending time among different peoples, garnering the respect and honor of Dunedain, Elves, dwarves, and wizards. In this regard l don't think Bilbo gets enough love and was happy to find some path for success with him using the The Grey Wanderer contract. While the art is a bit funny on Lore Bilbo Baggins, I think it fits thematically as he seems to be writing his memoirs, maybe about the times he would venture into Middle-Earth and leave the Shire chattering about what curious people and places this suddenly mysterious hobbit is visiting.

Gameplay

"Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick"

This deck utilizes card draw to travel far and recruit Bilbo's allies, and encounter deck scrying to burgle and sneak around Middle-Earth. I have been starting with Protector of Lórien as this makes versatile questing and defending. I've tried Strider, but you will ready with the contract early on to get resource generation so it was a little more limited. I will either have The Ruling Ring or Inner Strength as my starting master card. Power of Command can wait until you have a swath of allies to boost, but it is almost essential to keep momentum through middle and late game.

The first round or two questing is usually unsuccessful, maybe even raising threat 1-2 points, until your board state makes some progress.

Key allies are Firyal and Galdor of the Havens to maintain the engine (scrying, card draw). They are almost a 3-of worthy, but you generally need 2-3 rounds to pay for them. Risk Some Light and Timely Aid are especially useful to see in your opening hand and getting your footing.

Other Thoughts

I do think this deck has quite a bit of fine tuning left, but it's semi-successful as is. I tried to be thematic without sacrificing too much technical. It would have been fun to include cards such as The Road Goes Ever On and many of Bilbo's friends. Side deck is mostly fun, untested cards, though I had some good but inconsistent use out of Song of Hope

Please let me know if you have any thoughts on making Bilbo's travels more exciting!

"The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow, if I can."
