This is my first attempt at deckbuilding, aimed at learning about card synergies and theme.

I am trying to slowly build a thematic Hobbit deck for the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle as solo. The deck foundation is the recommended deck from The Black Riders Saga Expansion. For the rest, I am sticking to progression rules: only Core Set cards and cards from the current AP can be used.

Roles are quite obvious:

In this iteration, I could finally beat Journey to Rhosgobel by:

  • introducing Creature and Ranged allies - which ultimately I did not need
  • introducing as many healing cards as I could given the deckbuilding self-imposed limitations: Radagast and Lore of Imladris

The general idea behind the deck is - thanks also to some good Hall of Beorn and Vision of the Palantir reading - to:

  • Quest as fast as possible to prevent Wilyador from reaching crazy damage
  • Heal as much as possible with your own cards, before even making use of the Athelas objective cards
  • Be extremely lucky

Regarding this deck specifically: since there is no access to Spirit, there is no access to threat cancellation, which makes the scenario extremely painful.

The main strategy then is to get Steward of Gondor and Song of Wisdom on Merry, so that he can pay for both and cards, accessing the range of allies and events focused on healing and handling enemies that can ony be targeted by Ranged and Eagle allies.

Landroval is crucial to get back heroes when they die because of the treacheries - and hobbits die a lot here, with their puny 2 hit points.

Furthermore, scrying is essential to plan how many characters need to quest and how many will be available for combat.

Did it work? Yes, after 11 times. So: no. It did work eventually, but I actually never got to use Song of Wisdom. I just managed to have the perfect combination of timing, healing abilities, hand and quest capability - and I won with the best of feelings :)
