He defied the orcs of Angmar. He stared down the Lord of the Dead. Now, as his trilogy comes to a close, Bill the Pony must face his greatest challenge yet.

This deck is a sequel to two previous decks: Bill the Pony secrecy deck and Bill vs. the Lord of the Dead. It allows you to take Bill from ally to hero status in one final quest: Desert Crossing from The Sands of Harad.

This quest is by far the most challenging of the three. Unlike in the previous two quests (The Weather Hills and The Stone of Erech), turtling is not an option, since the heat mechanic serves as a strict timer. There are 36 cards in the encounter deck, and in order for Bill to become a hero, you need to have the encounter side-quest Craft Remedy in play. But there's only one copy. If you don't get to it within 12-14 rounds (or if it's discarded as a shadow card), there's no hope for Bill.

Mulligan for Firyal, since you can use her to discard every other encounter card. Risk Some Light and Interrogation will also let you bury encounter cards so that you move through the deck--and hopefully reveal Craft Remedy--faster.

Obviously you need to get Bill in play and have Sword-thain in hand, as usual. Word of Command can help. You'll also need lots of questing power to finish the scenario quickly once all the pieces are in play. Finally you need to be able to take care of the Were-worm on stage 3, who is likely to have some imposing stats by the time you get to him. The trick is to use Saruman to remove him from play long enough to quest to the finish.

There's very little danger of losing to threat--the heat is a much greater danger--so there's no reason to avoid The One Ring. Starting with Well Preserved in hand allows you not to worry about most of the damage effects in the quest, which can otherwise make things difficult.

My other two Bill the Pony decks were pretty consistent. With this one, it's going to take a fair amount of luck, but it's definitely possible.

Read this only after the heroes--Gandalf and Bill--have completed the quest:

"I thank you, my friend," Gandalf said. "You have shown yourself as true a hero as any in Middle Earth. Go now to Bree and rest. But if you would take my advice: it might be well to keep these doings secret for the time being. The desert is behind us, but a greater quest lies ahead, and my heart foretells that your part in the story is not yet over."
