As I've been away for a while on RingsDB, I thought to make one of my favourite decks that I have build with my current cardpool after the main decks have been build. So just as a heads up, the following applies:
- Cards are from the entire pool upto The Three Trials, with all saga boxes except Land of Shadow and Treason of Saruman.
- I know the deck could be improved but this is build from a pool where all the major cards have already been used, so no 3x A Test of Will.
- This deck is a Support style deck meant to be played with other players to handle combat, you do have some good defensive capabilities, but offensive you are very limited. Bring a player to the board!
- Feel free to leave comments, I can make an improved version if the deck seems interesting to some people.
Other than that, lets get started!
The odd duck in the Hero line seems to be Glorfindel as he has another version that would make this deck a much more solid mono- deck. However, Glorfindel also has his merrits. For one, you gain a hero which, in a supportive deck is quite good. Second, Glorfindel is able to buy his own horse should you happen to draw it. Lastly, he might be able to save a hero by using his ability in case all other Healers are exhausted or haven't shown up yet.
The rest of the deck features a variety of themes, most notably exploring the locations that come off of the encounter deck. The event Strength of Will has been around for ever and has been mostly forgotten since most locations now have 3+ questpoints thanks to that certain horse. However, it can be very useful in combination with Idraen to clear two locations every odd turn.
Scenario: You quest successful with your team and clear a location, this readies Idraen. Next, you see that there is a nasty location in the staging area that has been added this turn with 5 questpoints. There is already 1 progress token on it thanks to Idraen questing with Warden of Arnor and it being the first card revealed. Next, you trigger Thror's Map (optional) to cancel any nasty Travel effects. Then you play Strength of Will and exhaust Idraen to place 2 more progress on it, tap that damn horse for the remaining 2 tokens et voila, location cleared, Idraen is ready and now there is Threat out of the staging area and no active location to soak up any progress you make next turn.
Back to the themes of the deck, a defender can be found in Eleanor once you stack her up with a couple of attachments, Blood of Númenor never hurt anyone, Protector of Lórien can be used as you are drawing cards with Gléowine and have a couple of uniques, Silver Lamp reveals the shadow cards and the combination of Song of Wisdom + A Burning Brand can discard them anyway. Boost Eleanors hitpoints with Ring of Barahir and the two Thror attachments (the Key is just temporarily attached, mind you!) and now you can have a solid defender on the table who can also replace treacheries in her spare time. Some of the attachments are also playable on Glorfindel as you may find that he is more often ready to defend with Light of Valinor keeping him ready. However, he does lack the Gondor trait for Blood of Númenor and needs a Song of Travel for Silver Lamp.
Other themes are Mounts, but that is just a small part of the deck, you might be able to find your horses quicker with Westfold Horse-whifferer than you would in normal decks.
Questing wise, this deck is very solid with a lot of and being able to place progress in the staging area. Defence wise, the deck needs some set up and could use a Sentinel keyword, but aside from that can hold its own. Offence wise, aside from Glorfindel you will need some Ranged support from other players, you can also go up against quests with a smaller percentage of enemies if you'd like to.
And that would be all, leave any feedback below and try the deck if you want, I found it oddly satisfying that this deck could still function well as a support deck with a very limited cardpool.
