Card Talk 1265
Inspired by several things, this deck has been a little bit in the making. First things first, if Sméagol flips to his enemy side and is the only hero remaining, you don't lose the game. Related, if there is no hero on your board, you can take every attack undefended without fear of taking any damage, unless you get a nasty shadow effect. With that in mind, I thought I would first try Conflict at the Carrock to see how it worked. I then moved to a more recent scenario, The City of Ulfast, to see if this deck had any chops. I was pleasantly surprised.
So here's the piloting instructions.
It's a The Grey Wanderer deck, so you'll want to see as many Timely Aids as possibly early on. The hope is to get Treebeard out without paying for him, and if that doesn't work, get Firyal out. If things work out really well, both in play are awesome.
Also, don't forget that you can play a 1 cost attachment for free, so go get an Outmatched and put it in your play area. If there is a location out, you may want to get an Ancient Mathom for card draw, but I think the Outmatched helps against engaging an early enemy.
Try to get as many Ents out as you can early, while saving Treebeard's resources. They will come in handy later. Mitigate damage with Warden of Healing or use him to chump. Ent Draught goes on the squishiest things on the board mostly, but also could go on Treebeard if you need an even beefier version of him to take on, say, a City Guard.
Once you have a board state built, mainly with adequate , you can dig for the copy of Stinker using Firyal and Far-sighted. Once Sméagol flips to Gollum, you should have enough resources to play an Ent every round or two and enough stats on the board to take out the big baddie. For me, it was the trolls in Carrock and the City Guard in Ulfast.
My next plan is to do the same thing with Radagast and try to build an eagle deck, and something tells me it may work even better!
Gotta say that even though I normally would consider strategically losing heroes to take unlimited undefended attacks to be just a gimmick, it actually makes a lot of thematic sense here to have Smeagol/Stinker sneaking around distracting the enemies (none of whom can manage to find and hurt him) while your allies take advantage of this to hit back hard. Nicely done!
