Quest of the Week: Passage Through Mirkwood

I was having a little bit of deck-builder's block this week; I have a lot of different half-baked deck ideas floating around that I could give a try, but nothing was really sticking out to me. So in the end, I decided not to decide.

This is a Council of the Wise deck with 1 copy of each card in it, including ALeP. The result is maximum chaos! You never know what you're gonna get!

Elrond has resource smoothing to help me get those all-important allies into play no matter what sphere they hail from, while Arwen Undómiel allows me to pitch something useless from my hand to help pay for more expensive allies. Amarthiúl simply provides easy access to the two remaining spheres, in the hopes of minimizing the number of totally dead draws.

Because it's truly one of every card, The One Ring also starts in play. I decided to fetch Power of Command as my starting Master card (played on Arwen) since there's no guarantee I'd have enough in the early game. Arguments could be made for other choices though.

How'd it go?

It was actually pretty fun not knowing what I was going to get and just having to make due. For a moment I thought I was going to lose when Hummerhorns showed up and killed Elrond. But then a friendly location let me search the top 5 cards of my deck for a card and lo and behold there was a Fortune or Fate waiting to turn the whole thing around for me. Fortune indeed!

It took 8 rounds, but eventually I was able to stem the tide of enemies long enough to build up a small set of trusty allies: Balin with some Boots from Erebor, a Beorning Guardian, and an Orthanc Guard. (Wiglaf also briefly made an appearance but was quickly killed by some Orcs). In the final round, Galadriel and Galion made an appearance to help me squeak by Beorn's Path.
