Card Talk 1249
This deck is designed to be a solo deck using the only three Hobbit heroes available.
There had to be an immediate choice whether this deck would use Eagles or Ents as the supporting race, but it was pretty obvious from the beginning that Ents were the best choice for this type of deck because of how sturdy they are.
The idea is to get at least 1 Song of Wisdom in your opening hand so that you can play the lore cards from the get go. Most of the cards in the deck are 0, 1, or 2 cost just to help with resource smoothing.
The other card to try to get on the board early is Treebeard to help pay for Ents and Ent-readying.
The only other card I think I REALLY want to see early on is Master of the Forge to help get out all the attachments. The hobbits can be squishy until you get Sting, Ent Draught, and Friend of Friends out and attached to them.
Once the game gets going, it's nice to have Raise the Shire in your hand to bring out Farmer Maggot during the combat phase because he can do 2 direct damage and swing for 4 , which is pretty darn good.
Sting thematically should go on Bilbo Baggins, but probably makes more sense on Merry if he isn't already equipped with 2 Dagger of Westernesse's already. Friend of Friends will help any of the hobbit heroes, although it makes sense that Merry gets one so help boost attack but the second is situations, so its placement could be either other hobbit.
Ent Draught is probably best given to Tom Cotton early on to help him defend and take some damage.
There isn't healing in the deck because once the ents get up and running they can be expendable. Especially with 3 x Treebeard in the deck and a relatively love cost curve for the deck as a whole, you can sacrifice the leader of the Ents and just bring out another copy of him the next round.
Gandalf is in the deck to provide a little more punch when needed. With such a low starting threat, running OHUH Gandalf makes more sense then using the core version. If threat gets too high, just sacrifice him!
In conclusion, this is the first of what will probably be many iterations of a solo, all Hobbit deck!
I have a video showing how this deck came to be on the Card Talk YouTube Channel. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/HtwszRjcKeA

Apr 16, 2019I'm still play testing it... and I think that ring mail may make a a better card right now. If your interested, I posted the deck creation video on the Card Talk YouTube channel that goes through some of my decision making. It may not be quite active yet (about 10 minutes from now, 4/16/19, 1:52 Eastern) but here is the link if you're interested: |
Apr 18, 2019With the Raise the Shires and Tom Cottons passive resource smoothing ability I think Gaffer Gamgee would slot right in this deck. |
Apr 18, 2019Thanks KY! It is in the deck. Guess I didn't add it. |
Apr 18, 2019I just corrected the decklist to reflect the build in the video. I had 3x Entmoot and it should have been 2x Gaffer Gamgee! Thanks for the feedback! |
Apr 18, 2019Besides raise the Shire I don't see any other way for you to get Rosie into play |

On a side note, does anyone know if Master Ironsmith is able to cheat in guarded cards without triggering the guarded keyword? At first glance, it seems like you could. |

Apr 18, 2019It seems like Raise the Shire will whiff a lot with only a handful of Hobbit allies in the deck. |

Are you primarily using Protector of Lórien for defense or willpower? If defense, I feel like Ring Mail would be a better option since you're wouldn't be as reliant on lore/card draw, even if it is 1 resource more. Otherwise this deck looks like a ton of fun! I'm a big fan of combat Hobbits, so I'm looking forward to all the mono-tactic Hobbit decks!
