Hello, Free Peoples of Middle-Earth!

This is a Widfast Burglar's Turn deck I've brought to the last two Con of the Rings. It's had great success at the quests there, and I really enjoy how this deck is so multiplayer-friendly and, because of the Burglar's Turn contract, plays differently every time.

This deck features a lineup you don't see often: Dain, Haldan, and Widfast. I have found this deck to be perfect in an environment like Con of the Rings. I'm always happy to substitute some of the cards in the attachment list with other player's suggestions, or hand out something like Mithril Shirt to someone who really needs it. Most of the uniques you see here (with the exception of Arwen Undómiel) can be substituted as needed, and this deck doesn't even use Steward of Gondor if you're not going for the Anduril jank (I'll talk about it below). So the deck is very flexible as well and can easily be modified to fit in just about any multiplayer hero lineup!

About the heroes:

  • I originally used spirit [Beregond](/card/145003) for this deck, but I found that, if facing a 5-attack or greater enemy early, I'd often begin to accrue damage on poor Beregond early if I wasn't drawing any attachments for him. Dain ended up being the perfect replacement, since he can easily raise his defense in the face of stronger enemies early, and he only becomes better once he gets some of his attachments and readying effects.
  • Widfast is the focal point and the inspiration behind the deck. Easily my favorite hero ALeP has released thus far, her ability is perfect for Burglar's Turn for obvious reasons.
  • Haldan is there for the card draw, the questing, and once he gets some of those weapons on him, attacking. It is true that sometimes I struggle with attacking early on, especially if the weapons are near the bottom of Burglar's Turn. If this happens, you'll have to rely on Hunting Dogs, Gandalf, or Bree-Land Protector to add some attack power until you're able to get him set up.

The one ally here who cannot be replaced is Arwen Undómiel. Her ability to boost Dain's defense and give him Sentinel is absolutely crucial in multiplayer, and it is Arwen who I mulligan for whenever I begin a game. The best starting hand consists of Arwen Undómiel and Strider's Path.

There's an "achievement" I always like to aim for: the "how does Dain have Anduril?" achievement. In order to do this:

  • Use [Without My Hat](/card/305154) to pull [Steward of Gondor](/card/01026)
  • Use [Narvi's Belt](/card/03003) or [A Good Harvest](/card/06010) to give Dain [Steward of Gondor](/card/01026)
  • Find [Andúril](/card/306191)
  • Profit!

Is it always worth it? No. Is it impossible if someone else is using Steward? Yes. Is it fun to do? Most definitely! (Well...I think so, anyways). You see, Seastan? A Good Harvest is in the deck not just for Sneak Attack/Gandalf!

Regarding attachments, the one attachment I've found can be easily replaced is Keen Longbow - I just never am happy seeing it like I am Stone of Elostirion or one of the others. But even this one has saved my bacon a few times, so until something better comes along (nudge nudge to anyone from ALeP listening) I'll keep this one.

Thanks for reading, and see everyone at the next Con of the Rings!

what about Dúnedain Cache instead of Keen Longbow? can be attached to every hero not only lore.
