Mormegil 5393

This deck is part of Mormegil’s Deckbox, an effort to create an extensive catalogue of decks for the different archetypes, themes and playing styles available to players. Click here to check out the whole project.

Preferred Player Count: 1-4

Rating: .5

Premise

This deck utilizes the very strong Hobbit synergy first introduced in The Black Riders. You have your classic hero lineup with Pippin as a quester and a card draw engine, Sam Gamgee as a quester and a very useful hero for combat and Merry being your prime attacker (and quester if there are no enemies around). You load them up with useful attachments to handle combat, something that Gaffer Gamgee helps you massively with. A big strength of this deck is its low starting threat which allows you (paired with Pippin's ability) to avoid enemies for a long time, letting you pick and choose the time you plan to do combat.

How To Play

I like to see resource acceleration in my opening hand. Steward of Gondor is of course the preferred thing to see here, however Magic Ring can also help you out massively. Other cards I target are your attachments, which enable you to handle combat sooner rather than later.

Considerations

Elrond, Man the Walls and Take No Notice are great for higher player counts with Halfling Determination being a nice tool if you require a burst of stats in any category. Scout Ahead is always useful, especially if you plan to avoid specific cards.

Enjoy!!!

How is this deck RCO?

May 19, 2024 Mormegil 5393

What cards are not part of the RCO? Keep in mind that I included cards from the upcoming Ered Mithrin and Return of the King expansions already ...

Yes. Ered Mithrin is technically not released yet and Return to the King doesn't even have a release date announced yet. It's not the biggest deal in the world, and I appreciate the effort you put in to build/explain these decks, but for those of us with a limited collection who use "RCO" as a search filter, it somewhat annoying to get a list of decks you can't build using that keyword in the title.

I made a very similar deck but felt Halbarad was a necessity to make sure you get all of your boosts for engaging enemies.

May 20, 2024 Mormegil 5393

@ahez20 Interesting. I mostly found Halbarad more a surplas to requirements since you will be able to trigger most things with Pippin, Shirefolk and Gandalf keeping your engage bar low. The ones that do engage are mostly very wimpy enemies I find, so I never really missed Halabarad here (in other Hobbit decks, I agree 100% with you though). He might be good for some specific quests, so if you struggle without him or he fits your particular playstyle, definitely go for it :)

@carolina_bryan` Lots of people were asking me for some RCO options. So I either had the option to wait until everything is released an then publish (making people wait) or release as is. Most other players seemed to prefer having decks now (even if it might mean replacing a few cards) than having no decks at all for probably a long time.

I get you disappointment though, seeing a deck, getting excited, and then realising to miss some cards. Three things that might help you:

A) I tried to build the sideboards so that the unreleased cards can be swapped out for released ones.

B) There are still quite a few decks playable now (like the Noldor, Gondor or Vilya ones for example), with some new ones coming out this week covering the new cards out of Ered Mithrin.

C) On this deck ... Ered Mithrin releases this week. You will then have only a total of 4 cards (Rosie and Raise the Shire) to replace, which should not be too hard.

Thanks for reaching out with you feedback, hope I could help :)

As a mostly RCO player, I really appreciate these decks you are posting @Mormegil. Even for unreleased content, I can still pilot the deck on Dragncards to understand how the deck plays and then swap out cards when I physically build them, knowing I will eventually have all the cards at a later time.

@Mormegil Thanks for responding and being civil. I hope I am returning the favor. I get everything you are saying and it makes sense. Your are doing the community a service by posting decks with descriptions in the first place. My only suggestion would be maybe you say an abbreviated version of that in the description. I just think labeling a deck "RCO" when it's really "RCO (with a few minor caveats)" without clarifying that in the description is confusing (especially to the new players who are likely using "RCO" as a filter). I'm not even new, rally, but since the deck was marked "RCO" I assumed the reason why RingsDB was telling me I didn't have certain cards was either : (1) operator error on my part (i.e. I had forgotten to update my collection along the line), or (2) the database doing that thing where if you select the wrong release version of a card it show up as not being part of your collection. I spent a not insignificant amount of time actually trying to build the deck and wondering why I was missing cards. Just my two cents

@Hihowareya989 That is great to hear! Thanks for reaching out!

@carolina_bryan No worries at all, I get that frustration. Thanks for being civil as well. I actually put in a disclaimer ... in my deckbox, the section on RCO decks has an introductory note pointing out exactly the label you are suggesting.

Another thing to avoid frustration in the future might be the following: If you are searching for RCO decks on ringsdb, ringsdbs search engine has a specific option where it lets you pick and choose the packs you want to include in your results (if you go to Decklists->Search->Select allowed packs). This will lead to only decks with your card pool being shown.

And lastly, if you like the idea of a deck of mine amd are missing a few cards, I can only encourage you to give me a quick comment detailing which cards you are missing and which packs you own. People have done that quite often so far and I am always happy to help in that case, making suggestions and assisting players in optimizing their decks for their specific pool!
