DECK NAME - Pit Stoppers

OVERVIEW - Leave East-gate as the active location while you get your board state set up. Using Cave Torch with Denthor's action and Henamarth Riversong, we can clear Dark locations in the staging area. Thalin's response + Gondorian Spearman will destroy all the 2 enemies bypassing some tough shadow effects.

HEROES

  • Denethor - attach Cave Torch and 3x Unexpected Courage; The Cave Torch is great as long as you know the discarded card will not be an enemy. Therefore, I need to include Denethor and Henamarth Riversong. Attaching 3x Unexpected Courage allows Denethor to bury Dreadful Gap, Patrol Leader, and Goblin Follower. So use Denethor's ability to bury the bad enemies and use Cave Torch to discard bad treacheries or locations.
  • Eowyn - attach Steward of Gondor; she gives us needed to counter mounting in staging area
  • Thalin - All the 2 enemies are easily killed by Thalin + Gondorian Spearman. Starting the game out with East-gate as the active location means enemies will be stuck in the staging area while we get things up and running. So I want to turtle a bit until I have multiple Gondorian Spearmen ready to finish off all the engaged enemies when East-gate is explored.

STRATEGY

  • SETUP - mulligan for Steward of Gondor and/or a solid opening hand in general
  • STAGE 1 - Take your time and set up your board state while East-gate is active. I will sometimes draw my entire hand before exploring East-gate. When I clear East-gate I usually can Feint a couple of enemies and destroy 3 with defending Gondorian Spearman
  • STAGE 2 - I usually destroy Patrol Leader with Gandalf's response after making sure the top card in encounter deck isn't an enemy in order to actually damage PL
  • STAGE 3 - easy to quest past
  • CAVE TORCH- Use Cave Torch (only when you can scry) to whittle down Dark locations in the staging area; 3X Ancient Mathom and Dwarven Tomb for recursion leads to plenty of card draw
  • TREACHERIES - in addition to A Test of Will and Denethor, we can use Cave Torch to discard purposefully discard bad treacheries when exhausting it to clear locations
  • COMBAT - 3x Feint, Thalin/Gondorian Spearman, and Sneak Attack/Gandalf do what's needed. Use Denethor to make sure no enemy is discarded when attacking Patrol Leader.
  • Miner of the Iron Hills to counter Watchful Eyes.
  • Ancient Mathom - works great in this quest due to Cave Torch; use Dwarven Tomb to bring Ancient Mathoms back to hand for repeated reuse
  • Shadow of the Past - especially useful early if you're questing blind; also can use to set up Cave Torch
