Strategian 55
This is my first deck, created back in 2014, and I still enjoy playing it. It’s not super powerful, but it’s fun. I started by picking the heroes with the highest willpower, defense and attack at the time. Glorfindel replaced Eowyn because of his versatility. The downside is Beregond and Beorn are often one trick ponies and those zeroes for willpower can hurt in the early game.
Arwen, Galadriel’s Handmaiden & West Road Traveller were chosen for their willpower. Bofur can help with willpower or attack. Defender of Rammas adds defense. Northern Tracker offers many advantages, but is included specifically for location control. All the allies but one have Response abilities that can be very useful at times.
Ancient Mathom helps with card draw. Gondorian Shield buffs Beregond. Light of Valinor and Rivendell Blade buff Glorfindel. Song of Travel is for resource smoothing (this is essentially a Spirit deck with two Tactics heroes). Unexpected Courage adds action advantage.
The events are straightforward, allowing cancellation of “when revealed” effects, cancellation of shadow effects, threat reduction, card draw, & direct damage.
The sideboard includes heroes and cards that can be swapped in to address specific needs or add variety.
The deck lacks resource acceleration and healing, but the starting willpower is perhaps it’s greatest flaw. That being said, it’s still great fun and remains in my deck rotation after five plus years of playing. I often play at 54 cards, adding two copies each of Spear of the Citadel and The Galdhrim’s Greetings.

Dec 07, 2020what would you change if only 1 core set ? |
Dec 07, 2020You’d have to remove three cards. One each of: A Test of Will, Hasty Stroke, & Unexpected Courage. The simplest option is to add several copies of Spear of the Citadel. This combos well Beregond. I have Power of Orthanc in the sideboard to address conditions and The Galadhrim's Greeting for threat reduction. Those are the three cards I’d use first. Sometimes, I consider: Veteran Axehand for combat Northern Bowmaster for combat Silvan Refugee for willpower Pippin for willpower Escort from Edoras for willpower Misty Mountain Journeyman for willpower |
I should add that I almost always include Spear of the Citadel and mulligan for Light of Valinor and/or Gondorian Shield.
