This deck is meant to be part of my "Theoden's Secret Army" Fellowship, but it's also a perfectly serviceable solo hobbit deck. As I said in the fellowship notes, this deck is designed to give me a chance to play a couple of the secrecy cards in the Redhorn Gate.

The Heroes

I needed 3 heroes to give me a starting threat of 20 or below (to allow for a turn 1 Timely Aid), and with the other deck in the fellowship bringing the , this was pretty much my only option. Fortunately it happens to be a great option. Sam Gamgee quests and (once he has his hobbit cloak on) defends. Pippin's a card draw engine, and Merry hits things hard.

The Allies

Most of these allies are quite expensive, with the goal that they're more likely to be put into play with Timely Aid or Elf-stone than played for full price. And since this is primarily a combat deck, combat ability is the first requirement of most of these allies, but they're generally not too short in willpower either (primarily because this deck was made with the Redhorn Gate in mind, and so couldn't be losing 0 allies to stage 3, but this does have the nice side-effect of making this deck work well as a solo too if it's not forming part of the fellowship).

If you do end up having to save up for the full cost of an ally, Bill the Pony and Vassal of the Windlord give you quick chump-block and damage-boost fixes in the meantime.

Barliman Butterbur is my idea of shadow card cancellation. If something goes wrong that's going to result in undefended damage to the hobbits, he'll take one for the team.

Gandalf should generally be used for threat reduction, to let you keep playing those cheap Timely Aid's.

The Attachments

Nothing too clever going on here, just a selection of tools chosen to reach their full potential on some low threat hobbits.

The Events

The one card I really wanted to try with this deck was Timely Aid. It's worth mulligan-ing for to play on the only turn when you can guarantee being on 20 threat, and there are plenty of allies you'll be glad to reveal with it.
