This is the deck I built for The Ring Goes South using cards from the Fellowship of the Ring Saga repackaging and a revised Core set.

First, why Fatty Bolger? Well, in solo his ability is not great, it can help you quest in a pinch. But, his stats and low threat make him a very good splash hero. I wanted access to , he has low threat, and with Hobbit Cloak he is a great defender. He also can be used with Strength of Will since he is most likely not questing.

Pippin is great to help with card draw and access to .

The power of the deck comes with Gandalf. His stats are very powerful, so get Unexpected Courage on him. His wizardry comes in play with his ability to play with the top card of your deck face-up, and you can play that card as if it was in your hand. Wizard Pipe will help you put the card you want on top of your deck and it is vital to helping this deck run smoothly so I included 3 copies and 3 copies of Bilbo Baggins. Hobbit Pipe is another great card, with Smoke Rings you should be able to keep your threat low and draw cards.

Elf-stone helps get expensive allies in play, or use The Wizards's Voice to put those expensive cards on top of your deck for a powerful Flame of Anor.

Good luck and Happy Questing

In a non-saga deck, would you use Frodo Baggins. I would think so, as Sam Gamgee is also great.

Yes, I would swap Fatty for Frodo

perhaps (MotK) Sam Gamgee is a better solution, overall?

1 wp more and 1 thread less, but no defender.

While he can't take Hobbit Cloak, Gandalf is a pretty good defender.
