Book Club: Hearken to me!

"Slowly Théoden left his chair. A faint light grew in the hall again. The woman hastened to the king's side, taking his arm, and with faltering steps the old man came down from the dais and paced softly through the hall. Wormtongue remained lying on the floor. They came to the doors and Gandalf knocked."

I've decided to build a series of decks that encapsulate a specific point in the Lord of the Rings books, so they're essentially broad "theme" decks and the cards within are selected primarily for 'thematic fit' than their 'raw power'. As such these decks probably won't work against every quest, and should probably always be played as part of a two-handed/two player setup, so plan accordingly.

With this deck I wanted to depict Théoden's enthrallment at the hands of Saruman's agent Gríma and Gandalf's redemption of the King of Rohan.

Opening Hand:

This deck is a pretty straightforward Rohan questing deck, with a little bit of location control and the usual Rohan discard shenanigans. As there are precious few Lore cards in Rohan we're gonna need to be able to utilise Gríma resources, so The Stormcrow Comes is a great card to mulligan for. Snowmane or Elven-light are also great choices so we can get some extra action advantage for Théoden or start drawing some extra cards through Éowyn's ability.

At The Table:

Another deck that uses the Rohan discard mechanic, so getting Gamling as early as possible, we've got plenty of card draw to facilitate that, between Elven-light, Deep Knowledge and minstrel of the Golden Hall Gléowine.

Isengard Messenger and Keys of Orthanc can both trigger their response if you use Gríma's doomed discount to play them so take advantage of that where you can.

Gríma is going to be stacking resources pretty fast, as the Lore cost curve of the deck is non-existent, so as Wormtongue gains power in Rohan eventually he'll draw the gaze of Gandalf so you should ideally use Grima's resources to pay for Gandalf and Saruman

Sideboard:

If the quest isn't especially side quest friendly, you could try and swap out The Storm Comes for Song of Travel and if someone else is running a more dedicated location control deck, you could sub out your Strength of Will for Mustering the Rohirrim so you can grab exactly the right Rohan ally you need on a turn.
