After many years, Bilbo Baggins FINALLY gets his due. This deck is an attempt to highlight the little hobbit that started it all. After squeaking a win with 10 Boons in play at Con of the Rings 2024, Master Burglar allows Bilbo Baggins to be played with an impressive 3 starting willpower. When is gets combined with his setup perk from The Grey Wanderer, Strider, Bilbo can quest for an impressive 5 without exhausting on the first round, and even more if there is a high threat enemy in the staging area.
Starting Hand
The main card I am looking for in the starting hand is the largely overlooked A Burglar Indeed!, which will allow Bilbo to steal from lots of monsters and locations throughout the game. Once that is in play, the goal is to quickly get a second restricted attachment as quickly as possible, causing Forth, The Three Hunters! to flip at the end of the first round giving him a nice willpower boost. It's important to note that duplicates of A burglar indeed can be played on other heroes at the table.
Gameplay
The general goal of this deck is to loot everything as quickly as possible. This deck works best as part of a fellowship where extra guarded cards can get handed out to other players as you steal them, but Bilbo quickly ramps up into a very tough hero himself. With Sting and Inner Strength in play, he sports a 4 defense, 6 if you can get Hobbit Cloak into play, and he deals direct damage every time he defends or attacks with his trusty dagger.
Bilbo ends up questing for quite a bit after a few rounds, with his initial boosts (+2 for Master Burglar, +2 Strider) and the perks from collected restricteds (+3 when you have three restricted's and probably +2 from either Necklace of Girion or Stone of Elostirion) AND his power where he gets a bonus equal to an enemy in the staging area, Bilbo can reliably contribute 10+ willpower after two or three rounds of gameplay. On top of this, if you can get him going with Fireside song, it's possible to get his willpower closer to 20 by the end of the game.
A fun, if not insanely powerful, take on the Hobbit.
