Let's face it. Hobbits may have changed the course of history, but they can be pretty weak sauce on their own. Welcome Ents to the fray. While the hobbits provide a nice quick burst and low threat, the slow as molasses Ents can slowly build a powerful board that can do it all.
An opening hand should have at least one of the secrecy cards in it. Resourceful should go on Pippin first and Merry second because Quickbeam is one of the best allies in the game. I've also found Wellinghall Preserver necessary to heal up those Derndingle Warriors who will do the most of the defending once you get set up. If you get lucky and play Timely Aid, try and get Treebeard, but don't complain about Derndingle Warrior or Gandalf if you strike out.
The low threat really just helps with the turtle strategy. Hobbit Cloak and Staff of Lebethron can help Sam Gamgee defend in the early game. If you run up against a particularly tough enemy early, use those Halfling Determinations because otherwise they might just sit around and be useless.
A risky move, but I included no extra healing for the hobbits or hit point boosters. Either rely on a teammate to help you out or drop some stuff for a Warden of Healing or Ent Draught.
